I just got GREAT news!!

Verizon chooses Murrieta as one of company's first to receive fiber-optic cable to homes, business

MURRIETA ---- Complaints about the lack of high-speed Internet service in the city found a sympathetic ear. Murrieta will be the second city in California and among the first in the country to get citywide high-speed Internet service via fiber-optic cable from Verizon, company officials said.

Most industrial areas in Murrieta have no access to fiber-optic Internet, and service to residents is spotty at best, depending on what is offered by local cable-TV companies, according to city officials. Verizon's program will offer the high-speed service to every residence and business in the city, they said.

Works crews are installing conduits throughout the city and Verizon will offer the service in Murrieta by the end of the year, Verizon spokesman Jonathan Davies said Tuesday.

Fiber-optic Internet service is "a quantum leap ahead" of the DSL service Verizon now offers in Murrieta, Davies said.

The fiber-optic rollout represents a transformation for Verizon, he said. The new services available with fiber-optic Internet include the ability to play interactive, multiplayer games, to download digital movies in minutes and to receive telephone serviceover the Internet. Traditional Internet services already offered with Verizon DSL, such as e-mail, browser and storage, will continue to be available, according to the company.

Murrieta Chamber of Commerce President Rex Oliver said Tuesday the installation puts Murrieta on the map as far as being up to date technologically. This will help a lot when trying to lure businesses to the city, Oliver said.

"A business will often ask what our (technological) capabilities are. It's very important from a sales point of view when we approach businesses," he said, adding that Verizon work crews were installing a junction box for the service in front of his house Tuesday.

Davies said Verizon first installed fiber-optic cable in California in Huntington Beach. Outside of California, the cable has been installed in Keller, Texas, and in the Tampa Bay area and Hillsborough County in Florida.

Murrieta was at the top of the list for the fiber-optic program because of the tremendous growth in the area, Davies said.

"It is also a lot easier to deploy in communities being built than in existing communities," he said.

Another reason Verizon chose Murrieta as one of the first for fiber-optic cable was the city's complaining to Verizon officials about the lack of high-speed Internet service, Davies said. One of the most vocal was City Councilman Doug McAllister.

Earlier this year at a city goal-setting workshop, McAllister asked the council to consider setting up a municipal utility that would bring high-speed Internet service to every resident of the city. The council agreed.

At that time Verizon only offered DSL service to Murrieta and that was limited to 70 percent of city, officials said.

Assistant City Manager Lori Moss said Murrieta's inability to offer high-speed Internet hurt the city when it tried to entice businesses to the area. McAllister said the fiber-optic installation "changes everything" in terms of marketing the city.

It gives Murrieta an advantage over any other city trying to attract business, especially high-technology and bio-technology companies, he said.

If several hundred residents of Murrieta commute to a large company in San Diego everyday, the Internet service will make it easier for city officials to approach that company and ask them to consider opening a satellite office here, or to allow their employees to work from home, McAllister said.

I will be moving into my new house in Murrieta in December!!! Fiber Optic here I come!!!

I see refrigerator size boxes popping up around town (Bayou City). I think it's for all those red light cameras that have gotten so popular recently. I find my self screeching to a halt here lately!!!

Wonder if that fridge box around the corner could replace my SAT coNx? Doh!!! Oh well, been a good day in hell...

That's your three years + rite there (Verizon)!!!

The cameras are common place here in San Diego. My wife got nailed by one and it cost $350. I have to say that people are not running the lights like they used to in the intersections where the cameras live.
