Dell 700M Review (Pics coming soon!)

Well, got my 700M today (actually got it a good week ago, but was shipped home and today I was finally able to come home from college.) Here is going to be my mini review, and I will post some pictures when I get my Sharp TM150 Megapixel phone sometime this week .

Well here it is:

Dell 700M
1.8 Ghz dothan
512 RAM
40 gb Hitachi E7k60 HD
CDrw/Dvd
8 cell battery
Gap Laptop sleeve ( thanks govtcheez!)

Took out the 30gb HD after inspecting for dead pixels, and replaced it with the e7k60. Formatted and reinstalled Windows XP, all the drivers, some software, customized and imported some stuff, Firefox, Speedswitch etc.

Screen: This is beautiful. No dead pixels. In fact, I haven't heard of a single 700M with dead pixels yet, which is rather odd. But I'm very happy about it. Very crisp, clear. Black is dead black, its amazing really.

Keyboard: A little small, but will get used to it. Typing on it as we speak, and im typing faster than I usually type, most likely because the keys pop right back up.

Speed: This thing is FAST. With a 7200RPM HD in it, it blazes through everyday office tasks and it really can play some games! I've tried call of duty, CS, and BG2 and they all run great. I'm not putting my hopes into it running farcry or nething though!

And thats it for now, until I need to move it around or go back to school.
Coming up, Battery life, Mobility/Portability, SD slot, Wireless, and Pics!

And to confirm to those who have wondered whether it has a normal modular or not, it DOES! So if I ever felt a need to, I can pick up the NeC ND6500.

Nice review I knew you'd like it. I'm pretty happy with mine. I may spring for the 6500 NEC eventually thats why I only bought the rom drive. I'll wait until dual layer media is cheaper. I went to a gap today I saw a picture for the case but they had none.

Keep them impressions comin!

Well, heres a small update: Battery life is 5 hours on max battery, around 4 hours on max performance. Tested while burning/ripping some cds while typing and surfing around w/ music playing. So its not bad at all. (The E7k60 didn't, in short, have a large impact on power consumption at all. (I dont have a real point of reference, but the 700M w/ 8 cell is supposed to have around 5 hours based on Dell and reviews).

kingjrny: The dvd-rw you can buy and install on your own for cheaper than Dell charges you. And you get a superior (faster) drive to boot. The 40 gb 7200 RPM HD that I have in this system I bought from Newegg, not Dell. Dell doesn't carry 7k60 E's. (Just the normal 60gb 7k60s).

Ok guys, fixed the images. Turns out I put my camera on Macro mode (silly me) which = blurry from a distance and super clear up close (1 - 2 inches)

Anyway, max performance settings is a setting on Speedswitch, a program you can download that saves "profiles" that have powermanaged and CPU clocking.

Wireless is very good, picks up my schools B connection even from my Dorm.

wow it can actually run those games?! That's much better than I thought. I thought I'd only be able to play games like Gunbound!

I got my 700m yesterday and was on it for a good 4 hours. I thought it wasn't as fast as I anticipated. The 5160 was noticeably faster. So I went ahead and spec'ed out the Hitachi 7200, both E and Regular. Looking at the power consumption values I decided against the E considering if I walk off, I don't really want my laptop to be consuming more engery because the hardrive is "always on". I also was going to try the Corsair XMS 512's but decided to just get the valueselect. I anticipate this will give me what I want. Everything else was amazing. I got the hang of the . issue within a matter of minutes. I'll post here after I get the new hardware to throw in.

Do you happen to have a pic of it with the Gap laptop sleeve?

I picked up what I think is the sleeve from Gap today. Not sure, because they didnt have many and Ive never seen it in person before.

Also, are you using just the sleeve to transport it, or are you putting it in a bag? If so, which one? Was thinking about getting the matching Gap messenger bag, but I suppose any bag will do.

Thanks!!!

If you take a look at your order history on Dell's site, you should be able to see the specs. I think it will tell you the speed of your HD.
