I received the delay email from Dell today, says it won't ship till the Oct. 19th or before...I'm canceling. Going with either Buy.com or newegg.com.

well, dont all give up on dell just yet... i got an email today saying it shipped on the 28th (with the first deal) meaning it could be here real soon.

of course when i check my account it shows it still delayed, so i dont know what to think. Ill call dell later, see if i can get a straight answer, if not, i might cancel and just wait a while longer

Yeah, same here. I e-canceled Monday, no response. E-cancelled again Tuesday, still no response. Got an email Wednesday saying they couldn't cancel since it's already shipped. Order status shows backordered still, no tracking number.

Of course Buy.com has already shipped one too. Anybody want to buy a Hitachi 7k60? (I'm serious)

my drive from buy.com came yesterday as well...guess what, so did the drive from Dell. Freakin' morons. Order was canceled last Tuesday and I still receive it.

I am interested in getting the drive as well but don't want a blower on my laptop. If you guys would let us know about how the new drive compares, speed and sound. And any other comments...

what's up man, so mind giving us a quick review of the HD? Again, I am interested in the noise/vibration level of the 7200RPM vs the stock fujitsu 4200RPM (which is WHISPER quiet). I heard the 7200RPM HD has a constant high-pitched whirling sound - can you confirm that?

By the way, I emailed Gigabyte and Gateway about our problem with the wireless button in WinXP SP2. Wonder if they'll actually respond ...

I agree with all the other reviews available for this drive. It is very very very quiet, and much faster. If you have the 5400RPM already, you won't notice the speed near as much. I am very impressed with the speed and sound (lack of sound) of the drive. It is a little quieter and a ton faster than the 4200RPM was.

Whisper quiet and much improved speed. I upgraded the ram a couple weeks ago and that helped, but the 4200 hard drive was the obvious bottleneck.

I also got stung by Dell's poor customer service and as a result have two hard drives. If anyone wants one, I will sell the brand new unopened one from Buy.com for $155. Includes shipping by USPS Priority mail. Will accept Paypal at that price also. (USA only)

Edit: Drive has been sold. Thanks Rodney!

No they can't think more then 24 hours ahead, I had the same problem when i tried to order a Insiperion 8100 right when they came out. They emailed me within 24 hours of the ship date that it would not be shipping at that time and that it would be delayed. Needless to say i was a little upset espcially since I had already waited 10 days to hear that.

Hey thunder thanks for the response, you said it was quieter than the 4200? How's that?

I could hear my 4200 with heavy disk activity in an "average" noise environment. I can't hear my 7200 in the same types of environment. The only time I have ever heard my 7200 was after turning off the TV, closing the notebook and setting it up on the desk. The difference isn't much (or it could be my imagination ), but it does seem just a tick quieter. The 4200, of course, was very, very quiet also.

I guess you got the shaft on the 4200rpm drive I switched back to the stock 40GB fujitsu and I can't hear a thing unless it's quiet like it's 2:30 am and you can hear a pin drop. That's for position for everyday use, I guess 16 inches or so from the laptop.

Is there any constant whine / clicking with the 7200RPM drive?

Anyone with a 4200RPM drive got the shaft.

Hehe, I'm looking forward to eliminated the two remaining bottlenecks to turn my laptop into a true desktop replacement. Dell won't ship those HDs to Canada but if anyone from Canada is interested go to www.ncix.com and under Mobile Hard Drives the Hitachi is there for 350CND. Now go to www.a-power.com and look under Hard Drives and its there for 260CND. Copy the link, paste it into your order at NCIX and make them price match it.

I recommend NCIX over A-Power because my friend ordered from A-Power and RMAs were a pain and slow. NCIX is very good about everything and if you choose the UPS ground it gets there in like 2 days instead of Puralator which will take the full 5 days. Kinda funny since UPS contracts through Puralator.

Well, here's my saga with Dell and this deal...

I placed the order on 9/25/04 (right before Hurricane Jeanne came through and made it so that when it rains, it now rains in my house ).

On the following day, 9/26/04, an e-mail message was sent confirming the order, stating that the drive was on backorder, and giving an estimated ship date of 10/06/04. I really didn't mind since Jeanne was in the process of wrecking a large part of my neighborhood. So I waited.

Well, wouldn't you know it, on the night of 10/06/04 I get another e-mail stating that the new estimated ship date was 10/25/04 (a full month after my order). I'm really ticked off at this time. If they think that it will probably be almost 3 more weeks, why do they wait until the expected ship date to inform you of this delay? So that night I call the Dell customer care line to cancel the order.

I speak to someone in India who says that she will try to cancel the order for me. I say, "What do you mean try?!?!" She says that depending upon the status of the order, it may not be able to be cancelled. I tell her that since the part is on backorder and not expected to ship for almost 3 weeks, it better be able to be cancelled. Finally after several "I need to put you on hold to work on you request" (why did she need to put me on hold? was she talking with someone else? how hard should it be to cancel an order?), she confirmed that the order was cancelled and the order status page would take a couple of hours to update. So my job done, I go to bed.

Around noon on 10/07/04, I get a chance to check the order status. It still shows 'In Production'. I plan on calling Dell's customer care again that night when I get home, but I get busy doing other things. So, I figure that I'll call on 10/08/04.

But, lo and behold, around 9:00 AM on 10/08/04 I get an e-mail from Dell stating that the drive had shipped on 10/07/04. I'm really confused and aggravated at this time. I'm wondering what the status of my order really is. I keep checking the order information all weekend which shows that it shipped, but doesn't give any 2nd day tracking information. I decide to call on Monday to get some clarification.

So, when I get time to call Dell's customer care again on Monday, 10/11/04, at around 1:30 PM, the person tells me that it did ship out by DHL on 10/07/04 and was delivered at my house around 12:30 PM.

At this point, I just let the customer rep have a good piece of my mind. What lousy customer care and support Dell has!!!! I did wind up getting my drive, but I'm one of the growing masses who have a very bad impression of Dell's customer service and support. I mean that it's great that the drive shipped close to the time originally estimated and it is what I wanted; but it took several hours of time, telephone calls, and heartburn when it should have been a very orderly, straightforward process.

Even though it was a good deal, I don't think that I will be ordering from Dell again!

So how about these other two?
Does anyone here know the how these three drives differ?
Which one would be best for the M6811?
