Not everything is raw horsepower nor 8000 cc engines. Euro monsters (Porsche, M5, Mec SL600) have got more quality, style and technology than 10 Corvettes toghether.

Cheers.

And you pay for it, but it doesnt mean they perform that much better...

It's simple: they sell it for that much because people will buy it at that price. Econ 101.

There's no need to for car analogies or statistics, it's all economics.

I'm looking to spend about $3000 on a laptop and I'd get a Powerbook in a heartbeat if Windows wasn't required for the virtual design program I am enrolled in. I'm sorry, but I have yet to see any lPC laptop that has good style (except for maybe a Voodoo PC notebook, but that's really just an amazing paint-job on a clevo or compal, and guess what, you're paying over $3000 for a good setup).

It's all about demand.

BMW/Merc/Porche/Fer/Audi

If you've ever owned a Mercedes, Porche, BMW, etc, you would know the difference...

Just a WHOLE HELLOVA lot more thought put into them. They are safer, last longer, get better gas mileage, have more luxury, most handle a lot better, and also have better brakes ( yeah brakes, which no one seems to talk about for some reason. )

Their are reasons why CARS cost more than others, and yeah some of it is name, but their are huge differences when comparing a $30K car to a $70-$100K car. HUGE differences.

Now, on computers... Well. I don't really like Apple. A lot of businesses use them because it cuts down on compatability issues. As in, apples to apples... Most people go home to a Windows machine though, just more versatile, easier, more fun, etc. Apple costs more becaue it is the only person who makes them, as in.... No competition. At the same time, they make the whole thing. They're not using dozens of parts from different places, which means they have to pay to make all of them. At the same time, they also make the cases... Dells don't make the electronics, case, screen, keyboard, etc, etc.

So yeah, anyways. I've said it before... Stay away from car/computer comparisons. They just don't work :P An old duesenberg is worth more than any new car that comes out right now, so. I really doubt the first line of computers is worth 10-100 times what a new computer costs.

Econ 101? What, you get that at college? They sell it for that much because people will buy it at that price? Yeah, right. Try running a business. You sell it to maximize your profit most effeciently.

I hate college business... After years of being apart of running a business, these college terms and teachers annoy the hell out of me. Try that stuff in the real world and your gonna find out it doesn't work real fast... I guess then you go back to college a little longer and become a... Business Teacher?

Also, if you want to be able to do ANYTHING and EVERYTHING that everyone else is doing, get a Windows. If you want stability, and application performance... Get an Apple. Pretty simple. I see Apple is being some what specialized to a small group of people. A very small group... At the same time the whole group doesn't use Apples. I know a lot of professional engineers, designers, manufacturers, machinist, that have moved to windows... Cheaper to run, and easier to find people to work on them.

As for style... Well, if you like the "Gumby" or "White padded cell" look.... Apple is your place. I like making my own customizations to my computers. Desktop, or laptop.

Style is nice for cars but why the hell would someone need a nice looking computer. It just boggles my mind. size, weight, battery life, and quality are all things that are fine to consider while looking for a laptop, but you would never catch me shelling out $3000 for nice style. Performance is where its at!

Oh and saying that ur paying for better perforamce.. I freakin miata holds a road and track record for slalom.. A FREAKIN MIATA!!! And brakes are easliy upgradeable. As long as you can lock your wheels your good to go. Its only the temp you have to be concerned with but solid blanks and some decent pads should be alright..

Apple can charge prices that high because they are the only seller of Mac products. If there were say 10 other resellers prices would surely be alot lower, but since there isn't Apple can charge what they want and people will either pay, or go with a PC.

Oh and about the cars...I'll take any one you on with my saturn. It's a beautiful midnight blue '95 Saturn SL1 (do keep in mind i just turned 18 and it's my first car). Granted it won't stand a chance to your BMW's or Cobra's but i must say i was VERY plesantly suprised buy it's acceleration (as long as the AC isn't on ).

Anyway, there's my two cents
Hahah i got the samething with the AC... but next year that compressor is outta there...

yeah, wow your corvette/bmw/miata can go so fast. wow. wow.

that is of course assuming my jeep doesnt run over it while its sitting at the starting line. or i could just attach a winch to your frame and throw my jeep in reverse. if the cable is short enough and assuming you dont have 4WD, i will lift your wheels off the ground. then you wont go anywhere. oops.

as to why apples are so expensive. because that is the price people will pay for it. simple as that. the trade-offs between windows and OS-whatever are well documented.
