Service Pack 2

I know this has already been brought up, but wtf is with service pack 2. I installed it (2hrs later it was done ). I sort of enjoy the pop up blocker, although I never really got pop ups to begin with, but now its messing with some of my programs.

One example is BearShare (shhhh, dont tell anyone ). Its on the excluded list, but it still is keeping me from downloading files. I even shut the whole firewall OFFF and it still does NOT allow me to download files.

Any ideas on what to try? Thinking about just uninstalling service pack 2.

TIA

You could always upgrade to Windows 2003.

Recommending beta software isn't exactly the best suggestion to somebody who's having stability or connection issues.

This is true that SP1 for Windows 2003 is beta and also much more stable and faster when configured properly than XP SP2 final.

I know, I'm running it at work. In fact, I probably have a later version of the beta than you do.

I'm not about to get into a "my beta is bigger than yours" competition with ya buddy...build 1218 dated 7/26/04 is the latest.

1218 is the latest beta, yes... for the public.

I shall say no more on this topic.

Well I now have an idea who you claim to work for...could it start with a M and possibly end with a t?

lol.. any ideas on how to fix my problem?

Fire up BearShare, then fire up a Command Prompt. Wait for BearShare to connect.

Then in the Command Prompt, type netstat and see if it makes any connections (they should say ESTABLISHED). If there aren't any, then try explicitly opening the port for BearShare in the Windows Firewall and see if that helps.

Ok, so i restarted my computer, ran netstat, nothing was on. Close the cmd prompt, opened up bearshare, ran net stat.

This is what I get

Do i need to forward all those ports, 1031, 1034, etc etc etc?

Thanks

You probably need to open up port 6346 explicitly for BearShare. Sometimes programs do a passive listen and the Windows Firewall can't figure it out.

Try that and see if it helps.

Can you check to see what the scope is for the allowed port and application?

its set at "Any Computer (including those on the internet)"

If I uninstall service pack 2, am i able to reinstall just certain components? such as just the pop up blocker?

I mean, I am truely not worried about having a firewall. I go through a router (configured correctly) so I really see no point in having the winblows one. Maybe I'll uninstall and just reinstall certain components if that is even possible.

Unfortunately, no - it's pretty much a package deal for now.

Another thing you can try:

Open up a Command Prompt with BearShare running, then run netstat -a -o.

Then look up the PID for BearShare (tasklist.exe), and then see what ports BearShare listens to - then open those ports up.
