7200rpm hard drives

Hey,

I know there has been some speculation about whether or not the new Sagers will have the 7200 rpm for a 60 gig hard drive. From what I've read on the forum it seems like they probably will. Is there anyone who knows for sure. Also, what type of a premium would you have to pay for that? I plan on getting a 5680 and I want it to have a lot, but I doubt I'll be able to afford all of the premiums for top of the line on everything. One more question about the new hard drives. I remember reading somewhere on this forum that the 7200 rpm will use less battery than the 5400 rpm. It was only an assertion, so I question its validity. If anyone could provide any information on whether or not that's true, please let me know. It doesn't make sense that a hard drive would use less battery when spinning at a faster speed.

Thanks

I've read varied reports that they have the same power consumption as 5400 rpm drives, have slightly more, and slightly less. I think the good place to start reading is Hitachi's white papers on the 7200 rpm drives. To sum it up, it looks like new technological advances have allowed better performance without any tradeoffs. This is generally how technological advances function.

That article wasn't very specific at all about battery life. It said that the 7200rpm drives will be comparable to the 5400rpm drives for battery usage because the 7200rpm drives use a new slider technology. If it does reduce battery life, it sounds like it at least shouldn't be very noticeable.

Well it looks like the 7200 rpm drive is finally a reality - you can order it as one of the standard options for Dell's Precision M60!

"User-removable 40GB(5400 RPM), 60GB (5400 RPM) or 60GB (7200 RPM) primary hard drive (standard)"

Just $100 more than the 5400 rpm drive...

This new Dell laptop also has cool graphics capability, but everything comes at a hefty price tag:
"NVIDIA® QuadroTM FX Go700 graphics engine with 128MB of DDR memory"

According to Dell's Forum Moderator:

"Unfortunately we don't have online documentation for this (7200 rpm) hard drive yet, but here are the important specifications:

Interface: ATA-100
Average Latency: 4.2 ms
Average Seek 10 ms

In contrast here are the specifications for our 5400RPM drive:

Interface: ATA-100
Average Latency: 5.6 ms
Average Seek 12 ns"

btw, I think he meant 12 ms, not 12 ns...

Wow! I want a hard drive with 12 ns seek time! That's faster than most types of RAM!

I just realized that the alienware version is advertised with a 7200rpm drive. What gives?

Thats typical Alienware hype. They don't have the 7200 rpm hard drives yet. When they get them Sager should have them at the same time.

I should have known.

I must say - if I had extra money to waste, I would get alienware. I can really apprciate pretty marketing. They really have some of the best ads and best looking machines.

But like I said, I dont have money to waste.

I dunno, Voodoo PC has them, Dell has them...

I'd expect they got (or anticipate) getting thier 7200 drives before the new 51m is ready to roll, so they are selling it with the current 51m. Either that, or they may sell the current 51m along the new one for cheaper, but having a few components out of the new 51m (9600, 5600go, 7200rpm HD, ect.).

Availability of the 7200 rpm (overseas)

From a poster in Hong Kong:

"Hong Kong distributor/wholesaler Hitachi hdd's confirmed to me 18 july availability (7K60) in HK ... initial production actually went to IBM (revised thinkpads) / Dell / Toshiba ... with present production (as we speak) entering component distribution channels - individual users soon to have access ..."
