9100 built-in mic (problems)

hi guys, had some problems with using an external mic lately.

Started when i was testing mic in counter-strike source, then all of a sudden it stopped working. (mic worked fine before this) so i unplugged the mic and i didnt even realize there was an internal mic as the program was recording sounds. Problem now is that I cant use an external mic (just a long hum nothing else when playing back the recording, it cant pickup any sound at all)

only way to record sound is via the internal mic but the internal mic pickups up alot of background noise and is static for online gaming chat, is there anyway to switch off the built-in mic?

id like to try to isolate the problem, i really dont want to send back the laptop to dell for them to check the mic port.

Have a look at

Control Panel -> Sounds and Audio Devices -> Audio -> Sound Recording

and

Control Panel -> Sounds and Audio Devices -> Voice -> Voice Recording

If you're playing CS:Source Beta, the last mega update disabled the voice. It won't load the codec for some stupid reason.

Your external mic may also be messed up. To solve your online internal mic problem, try using headphones. I used to get really back feedback when I talked coz the mic was picking up sounds from the game and causing a really bad ring. Headphones will eliminate that.

ive tried messing around with the audio settings from control panel, microphone isnt muted or anything and the internal mic works fine, also ive uninstalled and reinstalled the audio card with new drivers etc, i found a few similiar problems on the dell forums but nothing too helpful as far as replies go.

the laptop does seem to detect when i plug an external mic in because te internal one is disabled while something is plugged in the mic port.

ive also tried 2 diff mics that work fine on my desktop computer.

i guess ill just have to live with using internal mic only and return my headset, shame really as the headset has good voice feedback, the internal mic one has too much background noise.

p.s. i always use headphones for gaming, but people tell me they hear background noise/static still, this wasnt a problem when my external mic was working at one point.

most of the built-in mics are that little hole, there are different inspiron models that have this built in (not all of them), if you have a small hole around where the power button is its safe to say its the built in mic (unless someone is missing a screw )

if you want to check you have a built-in mic (maybe on a diff model)
open up sound recorder and hit record, start talking and it should record everything.

another probem could be with the mic plug/fan unit, i was having serious problems with mine. When the cover that covers the mic and headphone port was sitting properly, sound would not come out at all (through the headphone jack) I ended up calling Dell, they sent me a new fan unit and all is well now. Have you had any problmes with sound through the Headphone jack??

Me too. I tried using the stereo mic from my Sony webcam, and had similar issues.

I found that if I pulled the plug about 2mm out of the socket it worked perfectly. Could this be anything to do with the Dell mic input being mono?

Try a stereo -> mono jack convertor and see how you go.

I am having problems with the headphone jack. Sometimes it only plays left audio or just right audio. Also in CSS I get an echo, and cant hear other peoples footsteps.

Did you have similar problems? Did the replacement part from dell fix it?

Thanks
