The Area 51m order to be canceled tomorow - read inside.

well i think im canceling, reason being is pci-express and amd64, against my better judgement and the fact im very very impatient only 2 months ago i sunk £1109.68 / $2,006 into my self build desktop for:

1\corsair 1gb ddr XMS2700LLPT TwinX(2x512mb) Platinums
2\amd64 3700 with 1mb cache (a good buy nowt in the reviews between this 1mbcache version and the new far more expensive fx) tomshardware is a good source for reviews etc)
3\asus k8n-e deluxe mobo
4\Gainward 256mb 6800 Ultra Golden Sample £433 alone! ouch

burners/sata drives etc from previous build.

even tho i knew pci-express was coming i bought the above which i am very happy with its a realy kickass self build, but pci-express exploded on the scene within weeks of building the above.

I can see me sinking another £2500 / $4520 on a maxed out area-51m (in sig now phase 3) and come January/Feb or maybe even sooner if manufactures want to cash in on christmas a new kickass mobile gets launched with everything we desire pci-express amd64 kick ass changeable pci-express gfx and all of a sudden a very very expensive area-51 is old news, and im totally gutted i didnt wait for the next gen release.

I must admit im strongly going towards waiting..

The area-51 is a kickass lappy thats why i ordered it and the fact Ive always built my own machines and really wanted to experience the whole Alienware thang, and my impatient side of my brain is saying sod it get it, but i reckon the next gen of mobile gaming is going to be huge!

lots of info kicking around it cant be long acer have already anounced theres, try google "pci express notebook".

any thoughts?

my first thought its desktop + notebook £3600/$6520 spent in 2months on hardware very soon to be replaced is probably not a good idea, BUT I WANA ALIEN NOW! lol

my desktop should eat half life 2 so im not too concerned there, but imho i dont think the area-51m will but the next gen mobby might!

At this point. I would agree that waiting is the best course of action. VIA just announced their AMD/PCIx chipset that should be available next month. The 51m is a great machine and I'm sure you'd love it, but it is getting a bit old.

I was waiting for the AMD64 laptop from AW, but it was pushed back until PCIe makes its way into laptops. In the end decided to build an AMD desktop and get a sub-notebook as a portable.

Depends on your timetable, I have a PCI-Express based LGA 775 system and there is NO BENEFIT at this time, I get the same same 3D-Mark scores as anyone with AGP8X, and to be exact the thing takes a ton of power and there is no gain whatsoever.

tbo its not just the mobo architecture im worrying about or current benefits or non benefits of pci-e(software not ready), but it is a direct result of the new technology, by the looks of things the 9700 could be the last release for the area-51m, at best they may release the 9800 after that i imagine all development focus from ati / nvidia will be on new gen mobiles, so i could be buying into a laptop sold for upgradeable gfx at its peak in last gfx release.

Im going to cancel and wait and see what happens first Q of next year, do without a mobile for the mo, carry on having fun on the desktop and wait for Alienwares next badboy.

My ideal situation would be a Sentia for mobile use and a self-built Desktop or Aurora/51. Ever considered that kinda option?

well its a sad day , but i think ive made the right decision canceled this morning, i actually got put through to tech and the guy i spoke to totally agreed with me with respect to me waiting for the pci-e release.

btw like many before me i quized him a little about rough release dates for .co.uk.

pci-e laptop at best december (which i personally dont think so) more likely early first Q next year.
also asked when .co.uk will see the alx not that i can justify that after my self build but will be there very soon definitely pre christmas.

need to chase the cancellation tomorrow to make sure as i can still get on the phase page etc at the mo.

watch this space soon as a next gen alien hits .co.uk i will be flexing the plastic! and for all those in the same position i'll race u to the submit button!
