Yeah baby! These work. Get the ones from http://www.s-seven.net/ati/ , they're already modded for the M9. The ones at ATI via 3dchipset do NOT appear to be modded. I did use the new ATI Control Panel and it works fine also. I had the Cat3.4s and now don't get the boot-to-640x480 problem.

Questions if I dl them from the seven web site do I just go get the control panel from ATI's web site after I install the drivers or do I need to dl a diff control panel?

Thanks

P.S. I really hope these resolve my issues w/Planetside

I used the DRIVERS from the S-Seven site and the CONTROL PANEL from the link above. As with most drivers, I uninstalled my previous drivers and control panel via Add\Remove Programs before I installed these new ones. You should install the drivers first and then install the control panel.

Thanks MrMsyvc!
I would have tried the drivers off ATI again, hopelessly hoping they would finally have decided to actually support the mobility card in this latest driver update.

I'll go ahead and try the S-Seven modded drivers, as you suggest.

Hope they kick ass.........

im confused, what does "modded" mean?

what does "modded" mean?
I'll have a crack at that and I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will jump in. I've only learned a little bit from installing and uninstalling them so much!

First off, the INF file(s) that govern the driver installs must have references and parameters specific to your graphic card\chipset (in our case mostly the Radeon 9000 "M9" (mobility) for laptops). Since the ATI-made drivers are not coded for M9, they have to be "modded" (modified) so the INF contains the proper references. 3rd-party driver experts and friendly hackers modify the original drivers and make them available to the likes of us. Some "modders" we've seen linked in the forums are Omegacorner.com, neutral-catalyst.com, s-seven.net, and driverheaven.com.

If you extract a "modded" set of drivers as well as an original set of ATI-made drivers (start an ATI-original install, let it extract, then stop the install), you will find they contain INF files. If you open these in Notepad and search for "M9" you will see whether they are modded (M9 is present) or not. Some INFs, like the ATI-original, specify the various Radeon cards. You will note however that the ATI-originals do not contain M9.

As I understand it, ATI will not include references for Mobility chipsets like M9 because they do not want to except responsibility for 3rd-party installations, so to speak. Rather than like a desktop that contains a Radeon graphics card manufactured by ATI, the laptops contain graphics chipsets (M9 etc.) that have been made and sold by ATI but have been "manufactured" into a laptop motherboard by a laptop maker. Let's face it, they're chicken and finding an easy out. Fortunately the laptop makers "often" make\modify drivers (as the ones on the Sager site and included with your laptop), BUT they don't necessarily update every single version of driver that ATI produces.

Secondly, modding can also mean adding further graphics "tweaks" and settings to the INF that will modify the behavior of the graphics card (hopefully for the better). I think the modder at Omegacorner.com does this.

So, that's the way I see it? Anyone else?

I'll add another question to this

What exactly is the advantage of using the drivers that are modded to work with the M9? I installed the drivers from ATI's site the other day once i saw the post here that they were available and saw a few more posts that said they worked fine. Since then I haven't had any problems with the new drivers (such as reseting resolution), but should I go back and uninstall the ATI drivers and install the s-seven drivers instead? I guess it all comes back to my first sentence of this post: What is the advantage of having these drivers modified to include the M9 in the .inf files?

Thanks in advance for any replies!

This is where I have to fall back on "I've only learned a little bit...". I didn't think you could properly install drivers that did not have references for your specific card or chipset. Hopefully someone will enlighten us.

I've been using the drivers for the Radeon 9000 (not M9) since CAT3.2... Basically you unpack the files to the ATI/Support/xxx directory, upgrade the drivers under Device Manager by specifying to use the new drivers (by selecting Radeon 9000).
