Buying Lion Mitac 8050 d

ok b4 i start talking about anything else here's something to laugh about: im actually writing this post on the ibm thinkpad 365xd with pentium processor with 99 mhz and 32 mb ram... well you guess right, its time 4 an upgrade!!!! (am kinda forced 2 do this cuz i gave my desktop to my parents)

so what im thinking of is buying my first "good" laptop , and after looking around i bumped into this one available at my local hw store in switzerland :

lLION 8050 D with this spec:

INTEL Pen.M 735 1.8GHz/400 2MB
ATI 9700 128 MB
512 MB SODIMM DDR-333COB-FOX SWISSBIT CL25
Fujitsu 60GB HDD 5400rpm
NEC ND-6500 Dual DL 8-8/4-4/24/16/24/8 dual layer
PRO/Wireless LAN 2200 -54Mbits
Card Reader Support Mulit Card Reader

and the preis would b: 2398 swiss franks = 1902 USD (inc tax n shippin)

so my thoughts were:
1. is this a ok price for this notebbook
2. does it really metter if i take 5400rpm hd instead of 7200? (i do intend to play games such as doom 3 and other kinda like games)
3. it says "mitac" on the cover of the laptop s seenon the pictures... how does it look like in the real time..good or cheap?
4. whats with the heat and noise?

1.) you can get a slightly better price in the US but for Switzerland, I'd say that's a great price!
2.) No, the bump up from 5400rpm to 7200rpm is not too noticeable. Game performance will not truly be effected but loading times will be slightly longer.
3.) I have the same laptop but without a logo. If it's at your local store, have them pull out one for you to look at.
4.) the left palm of the laptop gets hot after extreme gaming, and the bottom of the laptop gets warm regardless after several hours. The fan goes on and off every 15 minutes or so but is fairly quiet and usually not noticeable.

thx

well one more thing i forgot to mention is what about the battery life? i heard it can't last more than 2-3 hours when waching dvd or gaming? i'd say that's quite dissapointing 4 a pentium-m, isn't it?

no.

with the screen on second to lowest brightness (which is still very reasonable) I get roughly 2hrs and 40 minutes of battery life which is very good. Normally, the laptop gets roughly a 4 hour battery life with brightness turned down when surfing the web or doing word processing. the battery life is eaten faster when performing demanding tasks. This battery life is pretty good, some laptops have better battery life, but this is still very very good.

ok sounds good so far... so, i think i actualy might buy this one... 4 hours of word processing is more than enough for my needs ...

still i also want to be able to play doom 3 and the upcoming games like half life 2, so is the performance of 8050 sufficant for a fluent gaming and decent frame rates?

would it be recommndable to take 512 ram extra and push it to 1024 all together? i mean, i don't have to take extra ram straight away - should be easily upgradeable later on right?

Go with the Mitac, its a great laptop. With speedstep, i get about 3 hours of battery life, and about 2:30 with wifi on. Doom three runs very very smoothly on mine, and i don't even run omega drivers. I'd get a gig of ram. Better to get it now than to have to go through the fuss of upgrading it later. Plus, it helps gaming.
