...Okay i have recently played a leaked version of Half-Life 2 , It looks AMAZING!!!! And I am glad to say that all the people with mR9800 are gonna be able to run it like a dream, its not "AS" memory starving as Doom3 as some of you may have already figured out, but it looks amazing, better even. The version that I ve played as it is leaked its very limited ..VERY limited...only 4-5 levels (mulitplayer levels only). ALOT ALOT ALOT of bugs, and no Enemy AI, As far as i can see most of the textures are loaded and its looking fine !!!. I have alot of screen shot, but im not allowed to add any attachment for unknown reasons.

The pre-alpha bits and pieces that you're calling Half Life 2 is hardly a measure of how much the game engine has changed in the last year.

CS Source might be a better measure (or the stress test).

Its not that one, this one has quite alot fixes in comparison with the pre-alpha.

OUCH!! I got lucky, i didnt know about that at all. And as far as the game goes (looking very similar to trailers online and E3 previews) it is argueably better than Doom3, some people might prefer the whole dArK ShaDoWY SpoOkY thing that doom got going on..kind of like Splinter Cell, and people in Doom 3 just look amazing, the textures and shadowing is just amazing...as everyone already knows...but Halflife-2 is different not worst (DEFINITLY NOT) but different. My opinion as far as ive seen in enviorment (inc. Map Guns Cars etc.) Half life 2 is much better than Doom3..JAW DROPPING ...but in charactor I would probably say doom3, but by a small margin. Thats my opinion. As for gameplay, well lets just say it lives up to Half life 1, which beats Doom 3.

Well currently experiencing Doom 3 so I think it is an incredible game and Carmack has definitely pushed the graphics boundaries but I am sure that the engine could be performing extremely well even more so than currently had Carmack just desgined the engine specifically for Directx 9 hardware and not worried about backward compatibility. UE 3.0 and Reality engines are prime examples of the no holds barred concept. I have seen screenshots of HL2 and frankly since the environs are so different when compared with Doom 3 I cannt judge until I get a copy in my hands...but so far I am leaning towards Doom 3 for graphics but only for graphics. Overall HL2 is going to rock big time...and also HL:Source since I have not even played the first game!!

the half life 2 beta (anon leak) was released last year (when it was supposed to be officially released) since then there has been some patches to improve it but its still not complete.

the download file size for the beta is 1282 mb.

if you look at the preload size of half life 2 so far, its more than double that size so far.

also back then the a.i. was scripted in certain lvls (like the e3 demo) etc.

im going to wait for hl2 official release as its almost been a year and many changes have happened since then ( i dont want to spoil my experience)

older vid cards (geforce 4) can run the game fine in medium settings with the required dx commands.

the half life 2 engine was made so that it could play all ends of the video card series, you can get decent performance in alot of cards old and new.

if you want a realistic measure of how your computer will run half life 2, use the stress test on the source official beta, it runs a demo of the e3 hardware test and gives you a benchmark.

since the source beta my vid card average fps has changed so much (from all of valves tweaking with the engine) its gone from really high to low to high and now to average/high.
So informant can you define average/high fps?
about 40 fps in heavy fire fights (i play on a 64 player server)
the lowest i get is around 30 but that doesnt happen too much with around 20 ppl on screen at same time and explosions and gun fire)

the highest i get is around 90 fps just running around the lvls.

so average fps is around 60.

keep in mind this is a server packed with people shooting and blowing up stuff. the half life 2 game itself should run smoother, since its not running on a server with lag, netcode, etc... its going to be clientside so everything will be much smoother.

im guessing the fps will hardly dip below 50 fps in hl2.

where can i get download the stress test??
you need to have the official cs beta (ati coupon/voucher, or own condition zero owner in order to play it)

or u could "find" a hacked version out there (since u found beta shouldnt be a problemm) that has the stress test on the menu when u open up the game.

I ran it on ...oh and for people who dont know Half life2 is Wide Screen Enabled therefore it has a reolution of 1680*1050 and other widescreen res......i ran it on High Settings and 1680*1050 res. and it does have much option available as it is very basic.
3.4 northwood, 1 gb ram, 5400 rpm 80 gb, mr9800 oced (425/375).

settings: 1680x1050, high everything, reflect world, no AA, no AF (bilinear), vsync on, fps_max 65

vst -> ~50 fps
in-game -> almost always 55-64 fps... drops to hi 40s during large gunfights/multiple smokes, but not often.
