XP home and pro, why it is so expensive?

why microsoft XP is so expensive in Europe.?
around 300$ for the "home" and 400$ for the "pro".

what is the difference between both, and why it is so expensive when sager sell it for 70$???how much it costs in the USA?
It's $199 and $299 for Home and Pro respectively in the US if you buy it off the shelf from a store for the full version (not upgrade). Computer retailers sell it for cheaper because they get bulk licenses and can sell it for less, especially retailers that offer computers for less than the mainstream retailers like HP/Compaq, IBM, etc.

Because so many people pirate it and the company needs to compensate for it. Do you actually think people will go out and buy new OSs for every computer in their house?

Your notebook will come with a hand full of software, one peice of this is the "Midern Computer Inc. Recovery CD for Microsoft Windows <insert windows flavor ordered>". This in short is an OEM copy of the OS you ordered.

I still not understand, so how do you do if you do not ask for a window (or a linux)when you buy a sager, do you buy the 300$ window PRO sold at best buy???

I purchased a window XP (from microsoft) with my SAGER,I think I have the right to use my window XP on any PC I want ,no???or do microsoft charge me each time I buy a new laptop.?in this case it is not right, I have already a laptop with window, the window is included with the start cd(which has the bios, drivers and many crap softwares like how to register with AOM... ) and the start CD is only for my HP laptop...

John,

If you completely deinstall the window operating system from the system(s) that it was originally installed on, then you are legally able to reinstall this software on another computer. If the Windows operating system was purchased with a computer as an OEM item, then you can only use that software on the computer you purchased that included the operating system.

You should be able to use the O/S on another computer in either case; however, should not use it one more that one system at the same time.

It sounds like the O/S that you have are OEM versions.

Hope that this helps.

The system recover cd you WILL get from Sager is an authorized OEM version like was said before. When you run it it installs restores your system to when XP was initially installed. So in essence its windows XP for your Sager. This is how Microsoft distributes it when you purchase it with a pc. The reason why you don't pay retail price is because you are getting the OEM version which is purchased in bulk by SAGER the OEM. Microsoft allows them to sell this version cheaper than the retail version. The versions you get at some of the computer shows across the US are OEM version and will only run on specific systems.

System restore disk is OEM windows XP for Sagers only and retail version costs more than OEM version. OEM is supposed to be sold with hardware only.

Most restore CD's are designed only to work with the specified hardware. I'm not sure about Sager restore cd's, but other manufacturer cd's won't allow you to install on any other computer

Sager's is not I have used my Midern Computer Recovery disk on my desktop(I used my desktop's CD key of course) and loaded windows. This CD is OEM windows CD just with a different logo.

so what about if I build my own desktop? is an OS sold with the motherboard?
can I use a sager OEM? can I use my OEM cd (yes it s a restore CD for my laptop )of my HP for a new self built desktop.
what is the use of the retail version (sold at best buy for 300$)in this case if all laptops include already an OEM version?

can I use my old(3 years old) OEM from my HP for a new sager.???

I ask this becasue I think to build my own barebone with a shuttle case and a AMD 64.I was thinking by buying a window from sager, I could install it on my new shuttle.(considering I have only one window installed)

Nope, no OS is included with parts unless you drop the extra money on it. I'm not sure, but I don't think you'll be able to use your HP restore cd on anything other than the HP. If you buy a copy, I believe you can only install it on one computer. So if you got a Sager laptop, you would need to buy a copy with it also.

Kinda on the same subject...what's the difference between the "Upgrade" and the "Full" versions...physically speaking...I know what each is intended for.
An OEM(original equipment manufacturer) sells these copies with machines at at discounted price, that CD key is only meant for the machine it was sold with. The retail copy you can install on any machine you please, however you may only have it on one machine at a time.

I see now!!.

what pc torque offers :no OS, no OEM, for people who have the 300$ window version.

or buy the OEM at 70$or the pro version OEM at 140$ (not sure of price)and run only the window on the laptop they have purchased.

My question now: if you buy every 6 months a new laptop, is it not cheaper to have a retail window than to buy each time an OEM window version with the laptop?

I understand if I build my own desktop, I will have to pay 300$ just to get this stupid window unless an OEM version is included with the mother board(if that exists!).

I have 2 copies of XP Home running on my 2 machines and I purchased both on Ebay. They sent an OEM shrink wrapped bundle with a CD inside as well as the manual and the official Windows registration key sticker on it.

I installed it on a homebuilt system and my Sager 3790 with no problems. I'm also able to download updates and Service Packs from Microsoft's website. Basically these are full and legal versions of the operating system and each one only cost me about $90.

I'll never go into a store and buy a boxed copy of an operating system for over twice the price.

Windows XP is widely sold by OEM's on Ebay for a much more reasonable price.

*EDIT* - You posted a new question while I was typing this one out. Your OEM version that comes with your laptop should transfer over to your new laptop as long as you discontinue using it on the old one. It may require a call to Microsoft to re-register the copy for a new computer but it should work. I don't think the version they give you will "only" work on the original laptop unless they're providing a computer specific version of XP.

Seriously, if you're worried about being stuck with a "sager only" version of XP, just buy a regular OEM copy of XP online forr around the same price.

Can anyone verify that the OEM version that Sager gives is only usable on Sager computers? That just doesn't sound right to me.
