Sent in for RMA, should I get a different lappy?

I sent my AX7 back to Hypersonic (I realize this is a sager forum, but its basically a 4750) because it was having multiple problems. Tried for a few weeks to fix them my self with different drivers, re-install of windows and stuff like that. Didn't work. So I decided to send it back. I was thinking about just getting a refund on the machine and getting a Dell XPS or 9100 with a MR 9800. I'd be losing the AMD 64, but I'd be getting a UXGA screen with a MR 9800 for less money than what I payed for the AX7. What do you guys think about this?

i think you have been the unlucky guy. looks like that not so many buyer complaints about the 4750. if you live in the States, I would ask for a new one. What do you loose? 5 days maybe!(free shipping?)
keep the amd 64. it' s the present and the futur!
up to you, but you asked, so I answer!

But If I go with the dell, I just save myself about $1000. Not even kidding. And I get a perfectly good computer with better spex, better DVD drive, except for the CPU. I'm just not sure which way to go. Save $1000 but lose the AMD 64 but gain a 9800, or Stay and get the 64 without the 9800 and the DVD drive (8X).

Stick with hypersonic. Dell customer support would probably be harder to deal with unless you pay extra then. And you also can upgrade your laptop for 500 for a pcie one when it comes out.

what kind of problems?

I "CAN" upgrade to PCI-E??? If this is true, SCREW DELL, lol. But anyways.

The problems I was having:

Well, I install Warcraft 3 right whe I get the comp, right, and start playing it. Within about 5 minutes of play time my whole screen went completely weird. Colors got all screwed up, spastic lines everywhere, could bearly make out what was going on in game. Anyways, so when this happened I would just close the screen, let it go into stand-by, then open it back up again. Everything would be the way it was, until like another 5 minutes later where it would occur again. This happened in multiple games. And also in Americas army I would play and within a few seconds of gameplay the computer would restart with a critical error. No telling how to fix it. And also, in Doom 3 I would be playing and the game would either close out, lock up, or just restart my system (I know this was a game problem, but I got the new patch for Doom and it still happened...). I was also having problem with my wireless connection getting dropped every 5 minutes when it was "excellent!" I tried everything anyone could possibly think of. Tech support in each game, everythin, you name it, I've most likely tried it. Anyways, most of these problems didn't really bother me except for the wierd screen thing. I joined the stress test for World of Warcraft and the screen thing happened alot. I couldn't stand this happening in the game I was looking foward to playing for 2 years. I needed to solve the problem before that game came out. So I finally sent E-mails to hypersonic for RMA. The package arrived today, so they should e-mail me with what's up.

So anyways, MAYAMAN2, are you sure I will be able to upgrade to PCI-E, I read that I cannot in other threads. This would make my month. Thanks.

That was according to j4ever who recently bought an Ax7 as well. He talked to an official at hypersonic. Its more of a trade in, so you probably won't get the best speced machine, but the ability to upgrade should make up for that. I would talk to hypersonic to find out more about it. And you never know there still might be a 4750 upgrade. I wouldn't count it out yet.

If you plan on dumping your lappy in about two years, save yourself the money and get the Dell.
I have read soooo many posts about the gpu being the bottleneck not the cpu. Think about it, they all perform within single digit % of one another. The only difference is video speed if your concern is gaming. It's already bben established that the MR 9800 smokes any other gpu available right now.

So for $500 I can trade in my system and get a brand new machine with PCI-E? Am I missreading what you posted or is this what you are saying?

If I can get PCI-E I won't need to dump my laptop in two years. I willl be able to upgrade the GPU in the future. So I'm just going to see what's up with this upgrade thing. If it's true, well that would be nice wouldn't it

Hypersonic is known to have good service, they just take a long time to ship out a system.

you are misreading what he wrote. you will NOT get a new system. the will upgrade the GPU to PCI-e, and probally the mobo as well. but it will be an upgrade to your existing laptop. there not gonna give you a whole new laptop.

This is of coarse the case if there is even an upgrade available... im not sure.

To tell you the truth, I was hoping they would do that, just upgrade the mobo and vid card that is. I love my AX7. I just want to have the best vid card and proccessor possible

Notice what it says under my name.

shuu, agreed. 4K + posts is a bad sign if you ask me... maybe go out to the bars and get laid instead of posting stuff.... BTW, nvm. stay here and post, dont go out!
-more girls for me
- more answers and technical assistance

I think PCI-e is kind-of a waste. When it comes out for the mobile market, it'll be a while before you see significant performance increases. It will take some time before the technology matures to the point where it makes a difference. By then, new board archtectures and interfaces will be developed. In time, you'll be stuck with a machine that has slow memory access, the cpu architecture that's two generations old a slow optical drive and a screen with dead pixels. But hey...at least you'll have a PCI-E slot that you can slap an $800 gpu into....yea like a VW Bug w/ Ferrari rims and tires. whoooohooo

Why won't the PCI-E increase performance much? Why would they be developing it if it didn't do much. I do realize it is being developed for upgradeability, but I'm sure they will make a PCI-E card equivalent to the 9800 garphics wise within 3-6 months. I can wait til then. That will be my upgrade, then maybe one more until another laptop. I'm hoping to keep this machine for 2-4 years. It all depends how technology plays out though. It seems there is never a good time to upgrade relating to computers. Theres always something "better" right around the corner. Then when that is released, something comes out that is twice as good as that, and so on. Anyways, I will read up on PCI-E for now, it's not like I'm upgrading right now. Maybe I still will go with the dell. $1000 is a lot to save. Any other ideas or thoughts welcome. Thanks for the posts people. It's really very helpful. And thanks mayaman2 for being such a great forum goer, and offerring great assistance

Exactly for upgradeability. Why not sell you new hardwar along the upgrade path....what a great way to increase profits....Just look at any hardware enhancement that has already happened. When it was released, it was no faster/better than the current old technology. For instance, look at when the old-style memory went to DDR. At the time of release, it was no faster then the old-style memory. However, in time it made a significan't difference as it matured into DDR2. Same when ISA/Localcal Bus slots went to PCI, then PCI to AGP and now to PCI-e. It really takes about two gyrations of the technology to be noticable. Unfortunatley, benchmarkers have made BIG deals over single didgit percentage performance gains. These are gains that are hardly noticable.
Remember the saying "don't buy version 1.0 of anything"? Well, PCI-e in the mobile market IS v1.0.
PCI-E is great news for the mobile market but it needs time to develop. I'm waiting until it becomes mainstream in the mobile market.
