64 bits proc

HI,

I'd like to get every one's idea babout the AMD M 64 bits proc. For those who have one, does it fits your needs, what do u use it for? Y should I take a PM or P4 instead of a AMD 64 bits, or the contrary?

Thanks,
Blacko

AMD64 processors rock on games & compute intensive stuff

Right now, given that there is no 64 bit software, there are no 64-bit proc but rather 64-bit ready ones. The 64-bit AMD, for the moment, is a great 32-bit proc with a 64 badge on it.
For Desktop get AMD 64, for laptops Dothan rules. There is a galore of posts discussing these two - just use the search option at the top of the page and you will have reading for the next week or so.

The Dothan isnt 64 Bit is it?

PM if battery life is of concern...for sheer number crunching, AMD64...yeah, it does better in certain benchmarks, but for now, there's little real world advantage to it in a lappy...just a cost, reduced battery life.

Not intirely true, there are still very few 64-bit apps & games out but that should come to no surprise since Windows XP x64 Edition is still in beta. For Linux 64-bit there are alot 64-bit software already available.

Pentium-M is most common in laptops, but it definately dosen't rule. Laptops with Mobile Athlon 64 gives Pentium-M laptops a very hard time with regards to raw performance, as can be seen in most reviews comparing them:

The primary bottleneck in laptops atm is the GPU...until 64bit becomes prevalent in applications designed for the most common OS, WinXP, CPU performance differences are nominal...except in benchmarks.

Oh, to those who are gonna check Snorre's link to gamepc - also check out the rest of the pages for the WHOLE TRUTH on AMD 64 vs Dothan and not only the part where amd wins the benchies.

And which one of these do you use on your 64-bit lappy?
See my point?

I have a 3400+ in my notebook and its great. Zlatanov is right to say the Dothan is a great laptop chip...but that only depends on what you want to do with it, and for how long. The reason I got an AMD64 notebook was so when 64bit OS and programs did come out I would be ready for them. I plan on keeping this thing for at least 3 years. I know in 3 years my G3 will be really outdated but at least I'd still be able to utilize the new 64bit programs (if my system met their minimums) and not be stuck with the slower 32bit ones.

yeah, cause I want to use my laptop as long as possible, don't need a lot of baterry life, so... AMD 64 bits is good for me no? It will be usable for how much years do you think?

Thansk,
Blacko

P.S. Actually, I run a desktop PIII 866 Mhz with 512 Mb of RAM. So, it doesn't mind me if my laptop is old, at long as I can use it...
