Would you hate me if I buy a voodoo laptop?

I will be buying a laptop by the end of the week. Here are my choices. I realize this is a sager board, but some of my choices are clevo based so i figured what the heck.

These are in the order i prefer them:

-Voodoo m355 (centrino, pretty much fully loaded): $3300
-Toshiba S705 (you know the specs, sweet screen, great features): $2600
-Dell 600m (centrino, pretty much fully loaded): $2700
-Hypersonic Zx7 (fully loaded, 17" WIDESCREEN BABY): $3500

I know there are a lot of voodoo naysayers on this board, which i understand. The 600m and the voodoo I configured are basically the same laptops, except with a 500 dollar price difference. However, to me, the paintjob, service, upgrade policy (free shipping & labor, parts at cost + 10%), and the lcd policy are worth the extra bucks to me. These are both centrino notebooks, which i am leaning towards because this laptop will be used in college, and i figure i will need the battery to last at least 2 hours. Both of these notebooks get around 4hrs. The voodoo has an upgreadable GPU, which is a big plus to me, since the mobile 9000 is plenty powerful for me for now. I really like how with the m355 if you get a scratch, you can simply buff it out like you would buff out a car scratch.

The toshiba and Zx7 are very cool, i especially like the widescreen. The features of the S705 are excellent, but I think most are unnecessary for college. Same goes for the Zx7. I really like the 705's CASV screen, but it is a huge laptop, and feels kind of flimsy.

I know the primary thing that discourages people from voodoo is the price. This is a graduation present, so i kind of figure i should go all out.

I like sagers a lot too, but i really am thinking i should go with a pentium m notebook. The 4760 is very cool (and familiar), i just wish it was out already!

The real downside with voodoo is that it takes a month to get hte comptuer, i don't know if i could wait that long. I am really tempted to just go to compusa and buy the toshiba, but i would probably regret it when I have to lug the thing around and always have it plugged in!

Re: Would you hate me if I buy a voodoo laptop?

Well, you did have several valid points that I have never really looked at myself with Voodoo. You know pretty much from what I gather Voodoo, Sager, Hypersonic, Velocity Micro etc are all the same laptops manufactured from Clevo under different company names.

With that aside. As far as the upgrade policy VooDoo offers I can't offer an arguement against it since I haven't actually read any posts about whether or not it was worth the money and if it is just really as simple as cost + 10 %. If you got an upgrade from lets say an 8886 to an 8887. I am not even sure about numbers, but from what I recall it was 500 or so dollars right? Wouldn't Voodoo's supposed "cost" plus 10 percent be the equivalent of that? It might be less or more I don't really know.

The paint job is definitely nice. I sure would like a nicely colored laptop so you are going to have to pay the price . You can't really say the paint job from Voodoo is 500 dollars because nobody really knows what the value of the upgrade policy would be.

Voodoo's customer service? We've all heard crap about Alienware's service but I have never recalled hearing anything bad said about Voodoo's customer service. You might want to test the waters with a couple emails and see how long it takes for a response or maybe actually just call Technical support and see what it is like.

Hope this helps a bit.

Good luck

Thanks for the reply. Voodoo really does have the best tech support IMO. I have talked to 3 different techs on 5 different occasions (very cool talking to the same techs, they give you their number so you can ask for them specfifically), and they have known everything I ask them.

The upgrade policy includes free 2 way shipping, 6 hrs labor, and the parts installed are at the cost it takes voodoo to buy them (wholesale) + 10%. If the part costs voodoo 300 dollars, I would pay 330. I really like this policy because at this current time I do not need a 9600 or a 1.7 pentium m, but in the future, when the 9600 is out and a faster pentium m is available, I will have the option of going to them instead of having to buy a whole new laptop.

In the end, I am most concerned about servece. WE had an old IBM desktop and IBM had terrible tech support. Our HD failed 3 times, and they were not going to replace it until we had PAID for a tech to come out and look at it first. I went out to best buy and bought one on sale instead. Our compaq was terrible as well. The PC I am on right now, my homebuilt rig, has ironically been the most reliable.

BTW if any of you are interested in voodoo computers, use the chat with a tech option on their site, it is a very good way to learn about their computers!

... But you paid a couple of hundred bucks more to get a Voodoo in the first place....

but at the same time they will re optimize the system, install the latest bios/drivers (optimized), i will still have a warranty etc....

"but i would probably regret it when I have to lug the thing around and always have it plugged in!"

FYI: I got a samsonite backpack laptop bag for my S705 and that really helps the weight issue ( although its not really THAT heavy ).

Also, my laptop runs for 2hours 35 mins on one battery, and just under 3 hours 45 mins on 2...

Thats pretty good

But the Centrino will get much longer life...

voodoo pc and centrino

Hello. Personally, I would not hate you if you bought a Voodoo. They do have awesome paint jobs and excellent customer/tech support. You do pay a pretty steep price though. If you go to Powernotebooks.com, you can get basically the same centrino laptop without the paint job for a whole lot less and since they are a small company (as is voodoo) they get back to you quickly. They also have an excellent customer service rating on reseller's.com... you could save yourself some good money and get good customer service/tech support. If you want the laptop for school than the Pentium-m is a great choice. I was not impressed by Hypersonic's customer/sales support as they were not able to answer most of my questions but they are now custom painting their centrino's (not updated on the website so you would have to call.. they are using the same-type paint job as Voodoo.) They also have an excellent customer service rating on resellers.com... and the wait for the hypersonic and powernotebook laptops are half the wait time of voodoo... but yes, the centrino is the best choice for school and for true mobility. Let us know which one you decide to go with and give us a review...

continued; where is the editing feature?

One thing you should do with Voodoo is ask them what the estimated cost would be to upgrade the M355 that you buy now with the new 9600 (when you need it). Also, as far as the faster Pentium-m chips, the next release will be in November and will have a new core and a 2 meg L2 cache and will start at 1.8 ghz.. it will most likely require a motherboard swap. See if they can give you an estimated price for this upgrade... just thought these might be good questions for you to ask before you lay out the sizeable sum on their laptop.... Good luck...

I do know that the cost of upgrading to a 9600 will be less than 500 dollars, as stated by the president of voodoo. Expensive, but not THAT bad if its performance is really as good as everyone makes it out to be.

Very good point on the processers, I will have to ask them about it.

I will also give hypersonic a call, didn't realize that they paint their centrino laptop now

thanks for the insight

If you are are looking for a laptop you will be using in college go with a centrino one for sure. There is no point of having a monster with 1 hour battery life if you are not using it as a desktop replacement. I don't know how you got the 600m up to $2700 but I am sure you can get a much better price. Look for promotions in the next couple weeks as it is nearing the end of the quarter for Dell. Check out the forums on Fatwallet.com there are always some dell coupons floating around that could save you HUNDREDS. I saved over $500 by using a stackable 10% off and 15% off. Also with all dells you want to buy the minimum ram (unless there is a free ram promotion) and just buy 2 x 512 meg chips at crucial.com for about $130 each.

yes, actually, I decided to buy a dell D800. With coupons I save over 400 dollars. Should be here soon, hopefully. I'll post a full review of course w/ pics
