Hardrive Noise in 8886

I love my 8886 but the hardrive seems to click abnormally. Even when my machine is idle it does it like a clock. I am used to the sound of full size drives
and don't see why these smaller ones would be different. Anyone else notice this, or is something wrong??

Go to the device manager and verify it's a Toshiba drive. They naturally make a noise that don't both most people but most everyone notices.
Refer to THIS thread.

Just a question... does your hard drive click from itself or does it come out of the speakers? If you mute your audio, can you still hear it? I am working on a fix for the toshiba powersaving mode that does that clicking. Intel App Accelerator helps a little, but does not eliminate it. It isn't really annoying or a problem at all, but some people notice it and think something is wrong, so I thought I'd look for a way to alleviate it.

It clicks on its own. It actually sounds like the drive is bad! I don't see how this is normal. I've owned many computers and this is usually a sign of near
death???

Clicking...

Well, it seems the toshiba drives make a noise when they're in power save mode... If you use the Intel Application Accelerator and turn the hard drive performance thingy all the way up, the clicking stops. Apparently they make the noise by powering down every two seconds or so.

It's probably not anywhere near death, try the Intel thingy and tell us what happened.

What "Intel" thingy? Could someone give me a link? Is there anyway to
turn off the power saving mode in the bios???

Looks like my 8886 is the IBM drive

IBM HDD Utility

Here's a link to IBM's download site, the utility 'Drive Fitness Test' can evaluate the drive. Good to have on hand, If you call them for support the're gonna ask you to run it. http://www.storage.ibm.com/hdd/support/download.htm

Make sure you download the older version of intel application accelerator... The newest one does not support the chipset on the sagers because it's a mobile chipset. Try that and let us know....

just for the record i put on the Intel App Accelerator and set the disk to Maximum Performance and it still clicks.. it's really irritating
post #13 of 17
Yeah, the same happened here, but it is not the hard drive, it is coming out of the speakers. It isn't really annoying at all, lol, I just want to know what causes it.
mine is definitely the hard drive. the speakers themselves are "quiet" relatively.

hmm... this might be a long shot, but in your windows power settings, do you have your hard drives set to shut off after a short amount of time when on ac power? Also, do you have it set to always on or to desktop or laptop in the power scheme?

I downloaded the intel utility and now my drive is ultra quit. I haven't done
any benchmarks to see if it changed the overall performance. I don't really care since I will be using firewire drives to record. I'm happy now! (I just need sager to replace my mp3 player!)

i have it set so that nothing turns off but the screen after 20 minutes when on AC power
