Finally, Sager 4750 is here

I had the Sager 8886 before. I bought it from PCT (PC Torque) and I'm very happy with their customer service. I was quite happy with my Sager 8886 even though I had it for only 4 months. I decided to sell it because I don't like how it looks. It's very thick, big and plain. Yes, the look of laptop is quite important for me.

I keep promise to myself when Sager come out with AMD Athlon64 with 17" screen then I will buy Sager again and now it's the time. I don't want to wait for PCI-E AMD64 with 17" screen because I think the case will be bigger/thicker. I love the thin look of 4750 case.

This time I decided to order from Discountlaptop because at the time I was trying to order from PCT, there were a hurricane in FL and I'm in hurry to get this laptop.

I submitted the online order on Saturday afternoon and I got the confirmation email back on that evening. I wrote an email to them about I'm hurry to get the laptop and they reply to me on Sunday (It seem they also work on the weekend). I wire transferred the money to them on Monday morning and that afternoon I got the confirmation email with tracking number said it will be shipped out on Tuesday. Today is Wednesday and I got my laptop. It took only 2 day for the whole process. That's the fastest online buying experience I ever had. I'm very happy with them so far.

I'm going to install the system tonight after I get back home from class....

I'm really glad that there is no dead pixel on this display(was trying to find it over 5 minutes)... My old Sager 8886 have 1 dead pixel on the top right corner, but actually I don't really care that much as long as it's not in the middle of the screen or very noticeable.

Then I spent 1 hour read all manual... one thing I'm not quite understand is that they said with a new battery, I will need to completely drain it first then fully charge it. This is quite different from anyother device I've had... Most of them recommend to fully charge the battery before using it in the first time. So, should it drain it first before charge?
Right now, I took off the battery because I need to make sure I did the right thing in the first time.

I was trying to install Windows Server 2003 on this laptop(I'm taking MSCE at the moment), but it seem some drivers are not fully support Windows Server 2003 yet, for example ATI driver won't work full screen(only support regular screen resolution, not wide screen ratio).

I decided to reformat and install Windows XP. Everything went well so far except I still can't find the USB 2.0 driver. I couldn't find it on either Sager driver webpage or the CDs than came with the laptop. Right now it's still working in the USB 1.1 mode.

So here is my question...
1) Do I need to completely discharged the battery before charged it? (if I need to do it in the correct way)

2) Where can I get the USB 2.0 driver? (I already install Windows XP SP2 but it's still working in the USB 1.1 mode)

Thank you,

I did not discharge my batteries whatsoever. And got reasonable battery life. And as for usb 2.0 drivers, just email sager or pctorque for them. I am sure they could help with that.

Welcome!

Hello Kasteo,

I ordered the D470K (4750) from discountlaptops (also known as M-Tech) as well, and received it a couple of days ago. I've been detailing my experiences with them in a thread over at amd64notebooks.com, here: http://www.amd64notebooks.com/phpBB2...opic.php?t=539

I've been extremely impressed so far, both with the company and with the laptop. I've had a few lockup/reboots which I *think* were caused by a driver issue rather than a heat issue, but I'm just getting the hang of temperature monitoring and such.

I'm interested in hearing about your experiences, along with anyone else who ordered from them...

Thanks, I finally got everything working as it should. I'm very impressed with both Sager 4750 and Discountlaptops . I haven't had any lockup yet and it's been on 24hours for over 2 days now.

The only thing I feel it need a big improve is a build in camera. It's almost useless... the picture quality I got from it is not useable at all....either video conferencing or small picture capture. It's too dark and colour is all wrong(dark blue shade).

You have to have a powerful light source near it to get it properly exposed.

Here is an example I'm talking about... There is 120W light bulb shine direct at my face(only 2 feet away). I don't think it's not enough light... or is my camera defect?
Anyone have any picture taken from Sager 4750 camera?

Welcome to the Club! New members make President Ogre happy!

The light needs to shining towards the camera (not directly tho). Mine works great when I'm in a room with 4+ lights in well-positioned areas on the ceiling. Are you sure your USB ports are in 1.1 mode? Does XP tell you that they are? just reinstall whatever drivers may apply and it should work.

Actually it might be too much light. The camera quality isn't very good. But then again I haven't tried video chat much. As for lighting, try to dim the one in front of you a bit.

Camera brightness improvement...

Hey, I just noticed something. Install MSN messenger 6.2. Go into the Camera Settings, and click on the "Advanced" button.

There should be three radio buttons under a "No Flicker" heading: Off, 50Hz, and 60Hz.

Set this to "Off". Your picture should brighten up drastically.

Nice find! I will try it when I download 6.2.

After using this laptop for over 4 months, I really love it. It's fast and running rock stable. The only problem I have with this machine is the build-in camera is almost useless. The picture quality is much worse than my 10 years old webcam. It look quite OK in black and white mode, but if I try to use it in the colour mode then the picture I get is all blue and purple.
