3790 resolution too high?

Has anyone else felt that the WUXGA screen res on the 3790 is a bit on the high side? I am actually getting slight headaches from trying to read text on this screen... I also like to use the laptop for gaming, and I am wondering if I should RMA it and buy another 3790 with the WSXGA screen? Anyone whith experience with the WSXGA know if it works better for games?

You should adjust the DPI.

Display Properties -> Settings -> Advanced -> General

Select custom and adjust until the sample text is easily read.

Genius! Thank you sir.

On a side note, is there a preferred cleaning agent for wiping dust from the lcd of my 3790? I recall somewhere that I should not use chemical abrasives such as amonia (windex). Damp cloth then?

If all you have is dust on the screen, just use a lens cleaning cloth. You don't need any type of liquid.

My friend has a WUXGA screen and is telling me to go WSXGA for the text reading headaches too. Are you sure this dpi adjustment solves the type readability issue?

Changing the DPI will definatly increase readability in windows, however it doesnt work in everything. If i remember right it does do anything for text in IE, and it can also make your icons a little goofy looking.

I you have moderate to poor eyesight, uxga may not be what you want. its pretty darn tiny!

Well I'm a graphic designer, so I'm really worried about the high rez. I need to see type in several apps.

And 1680x1050 seems pretty high rez compared to most other brands that have 1280x800

I'll be buying a 3790 within a few weeks and will definitely get the WSXGA+. I had a Dell 8600 with WUXGA. I loved that resolution, at first, but I found myself having to squint constantly and/or get my face just a few inches from the screen to read text. Adjusting the DPI does have an odd effect on icons, graphics, etc., so that was no solution for me. I've seen some really good pictures of the 3790 w/WSXGA+ in the Sager Photos secton. That screen looks perfect for reading text and displaying multiple apps and windows.

Ummmm Since I don't have one of these particular systems/screens I can not say for sure... But on all the laptops I have had in recent years you adjust the display size too...

Right click on the desktop > Properties > Settings > Screen Area

True it won't be the "native" resolution for the LCD but it works just like a CRT.... I have not seen a Laptop that is "locked" into the native LCD resolution in quite a while. And as far as performance goes, I don't think you would have a problem except POSSIBLY in a game - which with an LCD is poor compared to a CRT to begin with. Personally, I wouldn't want one that is... Please let me know if that is the case with these since I am seriously considering one - debating between one of these and waiting on the behemoth NP9860.

You can change to a lower resolution in the control panel, but its not really something you want to do. LCD's are designed for a certain resolution and dont look right when you change to something that its not designed for.

if you go into word, type some stuff in size 8 times new roman, then print it out, the size of that text is roughly the size of the message text on this forum in firefox 0.9 (all default text settings) on a WUXGA screen.

i can post some pictures (and/or possibly a video) soon if anybody is interested.

Windows Start button compared to a US quarter on the WUXGA.

I absolutely love the WUXGA. My vision is perfect, however, so other people may not like such an extreme resolution. If you think you might have problems with the WUXGA, don't be afraid to stick with the WSXGA, it's still a very high resolution.

I have UXGA on my 15in laptop (older Dell) and I am a working "Graphic Designer". I love it, nothing beats working on large photoshop files or page layouts and being able to see the whole art piece without it covered in tools and widgets.

When working in Flash Mx Pro, it is even better. Authoring in Flash takes a lot of screen space.

I am currently on the hunt to replace this older laptop with a nice new one that will last me a few years, and I am really want a WXUGA. More pixels the better. The only thing that I am trying to find is a laptop with the specs that I want that has a 17in WXUGA in it. Sure it will be a monster, but it will be perfect for on-the-road graphic design.

Thanx, Idioth. Tried this suggestion and have confirmed my decision on getting the WSXGA. I love "crisp" but I really want to read comfortably. Finally had to get the dreaded bifocals.

WUXGA is an acquired taste. I've always ran my computers at max resolution, so it was an easy conversion for me. I wouldn't recommend it for everyone though.

Interesting - Discount Laptops has a 1200 x 800 option for the 3790 now.

it's not hard to mess with your settings to make everything readable. after adjusting my DPI, and then messing around with my display sizes a bit, everything is perfect. When web sites have small test, I just increase the text size in my browser and it's just fine. And when I need to do anything hi-rez, nothing beats my WUXGA. It's also gorgeous for DVDs. Get it!

kdynamic,

couldja wouldja be so kind as to post a pic with say some text printed in 8pt & 12pt next to the screen, for comparison...

Idioth,

Interested in your pics for sure....

Hey there. I'm going to get the 3790 too. My main concern is the WSXGA. I used to chat a lot and had tons of IM windows and 1920x1200 was awesome. But not I don't chat much but I still don't find myself squinting either. My girlfriend's telling me to stick with WUXGA because "you're gonna regret it and wanna return it." I changed my resolution to 1680x and it seemed fine but then again, it would be much sharper had the screen been a WSXGA than WUXGA. Decisions decisions.

Well, just wanted to say what's up and interesting we're both in the same boat. . . relatively.

Hello, JF! I hear ya on the WUXGA vs. WSXGA+ issue. I've been reconsidering whether to get the higher resolution, too. However, I distinctly remember how tiresome it was to view the WUXGA on my old 8600. I figure that I'll try the WSXGA+ and if it's not right, I'll return it for a WUXGA.
