Nostalgic GeForce2go Question

Thread Starter
My brother recently bought a Dell Latitude C610 from ebay and everytime I see an older rig my make-it-faster-genes get the better part of me.

PIIIm 1.13GHz
14.1" TFT (I think it's a XGA - but the rig havn't arrived yet)
nVidia GeForce2 Go with 32MB
256 MB 133 MHz SDRAM

My questions are:

What are the most recommendable drivers for that card?
(I don't have experiences with mobile nVidias)

What are the upgrade possibilities?
(max. RAM, optical drives, maybe even graphic card)

Thx

Cant help you with drivers but can shed some light on upgrade options... I have the Inspiron 4150 (see sig) which is exactly the same laptop as the 610/ 640 but where the inspiron was the consumer version and the lattitude was the business version. 610 was PIIIM and 640 was P4-M but otherwise they were the same.

Processor:
Hes got the top model for the 610. (Intel did briefly make a 1.2Ghz PIIIM but I dont think dell ever sold it so would not have the bios support for the 1.2.

Video:
It will take up to the ATI Mobility M7 (Which is the Mobility Radeon 7500c 16 or 32 Meg DDR) which is a daughtercard and can be straight swapped. A recent bios upgrade on the 610 MIGHT support the card, though you would have to source a card off ebay as dell never would sell the daughtercards direct to customers. If you can get an M7 it is about 50 to 100% faster than the '2go' in general.

Ram:
You have 2 memory banks in the C610 (easily accessible), and each will take a 512 stick of PC 133 SDRAM SoDimm. So thats 1024 Meg max.

Drives:
The main drive is hot swappable and is the same as those used in the Lattitude 610/640/810/840, Inspiron 4000/ 4100/ 4150 and the 8000/8100. Your options are (depending on what you can find on ebay or what dell still sell)...

DVD Module (8x)
CD Module (24x)
DVD/CD-RW Combo Module 8x/24x/10x/24x
DVD Rewriter Module (Not sure what speed)
Floppy Drive Module
ZIP 100Mb Module
HDD Module (Takes any 2.5" notebook drive as a 2nd drive)
Second Battery Module

Hard Disk:
Will definately take up to a 40Gb 5400RPM drive (Incredibly easily swappable also) and Ive seen the off C610 using a 60Gb drive without problems. Not sure about 80Gb drives though as the bios may not support those.

Mini PCI:
You have a standard Mini PCI card slot (easily accessible) which will take a Dell truemobile WI-FI card...Can be had for about £30 ($60?) off ebay or less.

Thats about it really, except to say that the vid card can be gently overclocked via software (both the 2go and M7) which makes a subtle difference in games....Oh and the 5400RPM drive makes a HUGE speed difference on the lattitude/ Inspiron over the standard 4200RPM...Believe Me!

Thanks a lot for this info. Is the ATI Mobility 7500 really so much faster than the GeForce2Go - gee had no idea - thought the 9000 would be the next bigger ATI. I've seen a 64MB variante of the 7500 on ebay claiming it'll work in a C610. What do you think?

I thought about upgrading to a 60GB/7200RPM cos' it works perfectly in my rig.

Is only the Dell Truemobile WLAN card supported?
Yep the 7500 really IS that much faster. Remember it had hardware T&L which im not sure the 2go had...Either way I get around 50 to 75 fps in Unreal Tournament (1st version) on 1280x1024 so not too shabby for a 2nd gen radeon. Obviously forget recent games...but MOH, RTCW and stuff like that noo probs.

The 64Mb version will definately NOT fit the 610 or 640 for that matter. Only the bigger 800 series ever had 64mb gfx memory and the daughter cards are absolutelu NOT interchangeable....so whoever's selling one on ebay as compatible with the 610 is very wrong...or trying to sell a lemon.

I would have thought the 60Gb 7200rpm would work in it, you just have to remember the 610 is a relatively thin and light so watch out for overheating....that said the 5400rpm 40k IBM in mine doesnt cause any problems at all...and id have thought the bios would recognise the 60gb. Also the hard drive is on a caddy which takes only a couple of screws to remove and swap out...very very easy stuff.

As far as wi-fi is concerned the whole 6xx and inspiron 4xxx series were very picky about what would work in their mini pci slots. I tried an intel wifi card in mine but never did get it to work. The truemobile card went straight in no problems, recognised on boot and works perfectly. Really dont know if any other card would work...but I suspect not.

So to get this straight.
The ATI 7500 with 32 MB and the Dell Truemobile Wireless might work with the C610?
Yep....but as i say only the 16 or 32mb 7500 designed for the lattitude 6xx or inspiron 4xxx chassis and NOT the 8xx or 8xxx chassis.
