Questions about Sager 5690

Thread Starter
I'm considering purchasing a Sager 5690. The specs of the one I'm interested in as listed below. I will be using the notebook for mainly web browsing, Office Products, and some gaming (Such as Warhammer: Dawn of War, WarCraft 3, and some FPS). I'm having trouble deciding between which display to get, either the 15" SXGA+LCD, or the UXGA Wide Angle View 15" LCD. Also, would it be worth it to go ahead and get the 60GB 7200rpm drive instead of the 60GB 5400rpm drive. And is the additional warrenty worth about $100?

Specs
3.0 GHz P4
512MB
128MB ATI 9700
60GB 5400rpms
DVD/CD-RW Combo Drive
1.44MB Floppy Drive
Internal Wireless G
3yr Warrenty

* uXGA well worth the xtra money, very nice crisp screen.

* 5400rpm works great for me, the faster one may create more heat. Haven't really seen much real-life difference between the speeds.

* I would recommend the warranty for peace of mind, also an added feature if you sell the 5690 within the warranty time frame.

Follow up on same topic:

I've been comparing the 5690 to the HP ZX5000 - which has several of same options of screens, but they also have a 15.4 or 15" screen - is there much difference? What do the different letters mean on Screen displays?

SAGER:
15.0 SXGA
15.0 UXGA

HP
15.0" XGA (1024 x 768)
15.4" WXGA (1280x800)
15.4" WXGA BrightView Widescreen(1280x800)
15.4" WVA WSXGA+ (1680x1050)
15.4" WVA WUXGA (1920x1200)

My guess inductively is that SXGA = 1680x1050 without the W prefix means the 15.4 wide screen format? and UXGA is 1920 x 1200, again, w/o the widescreen format?

Which has the higher Aquamark of the Sager options? My guess is the SXGA, as there is less pixels being manipulated.

AquaMark
27,509 without MaxFan
30,169 with MaxFan
This is stock with the 2.5.44 Omega's

I bought the 5690(see sig), and have NO regrets. I compared the other options, and decided on the Sager. I don't do much gaming, but when I do I it is VERY intense and long session type gaming(FC, Painkiller, GR, etc.).

I use mine as a mobile darkroom PSCS (10-150 Mb files)and web design. Graphics intense, to say the least. Never had a problem slowing down or over heating.

I also got the extended warranty and transit coverage, just in case.

It all comes down to what you want, and can afford to pay.

Whats the 2.5.4 Omega's mean? (sorry being so n00b)

Also I actually wanted a comparison between the two different screen options (SXGA and UXGA) - surely the more pixels that need rendering the slower the processing?

Thanks for helping though!

I guess another question is where should I purchase the laptop from? Is there any benifit in getting it from a Reseller like ABS, Hypersonic, etc....

The Omega's are updated/tweaked video drivers.

The UGXA screen has more pixels per inch, and a wider viewing angle. This is a must have for photo and video editing. Also great for gaming and viewing DVD's.

I have had both and will NEVER go back to a SXGA display.

I searched them all and settled with PCTorque, based on these forums and communication with PCT.

Has anyone had any problems with the Internal Wireless card?

Connected right up following loading of the driver- using a D-link di624 access point.

I'm guessing I'm probably gonna have regrets over the fact that I didn't get the UXGA display with my laptop, but I just don't like the look of widescreen monitors for some reason. How bad is the normal SXGA display really? Will it be fine for just me to sit there and look at it and game, or is it really bad as far as the viewing angles go? Anyone with the SXGA wanna share experiences with it?

The 7200 does NOT create more heat. And it increases boot times, level loading, and other such function by a couple seconds.

i have to say i regret my sxga screen for its viewing angles, and its clarity. when showing people stuff, they basiclly have to be in the set and adjust it for themselves, very embrassing. =[

with that note, if later on i wanted to upgrade just my screen,
is that possible? like i have to pay for shipping to and fro and
what not?? thanks

The UXGA is NOT a widescreen. Just a wider viewing angle.

You're best bet would be to contact PCT or Sager to get the answer for that one. I love my UXGA. Good luck.
