i want a good portable laptop under 1200$. new/used/mint is fine, but keyboard has to be clean of grub and excess dirt

minimums:
centrino
802.11g
dvd-rom
good battery time
12" monitor. nothing bigger
60 gigabyte hd minimum
512 mb ram minimum

Wow! Tough Specs for $1200 Bucks - Might I suggest Looking at Sagers new 12" - It'll run a little more but will suit your needs very nicely - I think your biggest hurdle will be finding the size system you need for the price because 12" and under is hitting "ultraPortable" class with those specs . . . Good Luck though!

I just built one of the 12.1" M5N barebone from Asus with a 1.5 Pentium M with centrino and 256mb, and 30gb hd for $1400 new, so Im guessing your best bet is to get a used one for the price your asking.

Try an Asus S5NE. Not quite $1200 USD but it's very lightweight. I can vouch for that.

thanks guys. sorry about the lack of participation. kind of neglected this thread due to some overload college work. btw, whats the difficulty level of upgrading your laptops ram and harddrive. i am guessing it depends on the laptop? this way, im thinking if i can get a entry level type of laptop and just upgrade the ram and hd from ebay and sell out the old ones.

Maybe it will suit your needs. It has an active warranty from best buy so you are covered for any malfunctions. And the warranty is transferable.
