Myst 4: Revelation

Hey

I was thinking about getting Myst 4: Revelation.

However, I've never played any of the other Myst games and I'm curious about what level of skill is required to get through the puzzles. Like, am I going to have to definately get a strategy guide or look for a guide on the internet (I know their are free hints out there).

Also, how does it run on i9100 w/ ATI MR9700 128MB card? (see the rest of my stats in my sig)

Just looking to see if anyone was already playing this game and if it's worth the buy.

Thanks~!

Well I played Uru on my XPS when I had my 9700 in it, and it ran *beautifully*. As to the skill level, I think just about anyone with enough patience could get through even the most difficult puzzles. That's half the fun in fact, as it forces you to think outside your normal 'box', it forces you to get creative, unlike most games nowadays (ahem FPS's I'm thinking of you.). There are or there will be 'spoiler free' hints if you truly get stuck too, usually at www.gamefaqs.com. They can give you a little nudge if you need it. :0)

The Myst games are all excellent. I loved every single one of them, if you like puzzles at all you should play them. However, yes, they are HARD. Most often excruciatingly hard. If memory serves, every one of them (haven't played Revelations yet) will pretty much require you to have a nice hefty pad of paper and pencils at your side to play them without a guide book. Yet even though they're so damn hard, they're still tons of fun. You can probably find demos of the newer ones if you want to give them a try.

Haha, the minimum requirements for Myst are a Radeon 7000 with 32 MB VRAM, P 4 with 700 Mhz and 128 MB RAM...
This game will bore your machine...

Myst IV, I believe, is just like all the other Myst games (excluding Uru) in that it is pre-rendered i.e. the graphics card doesn't do almost any work, other than displaying the pixels from the pictures, no polygons or any other calulations. Uru, on the other hand is actually 3D if I can remember correctly, so it is dependant on the graphics card you have.

Well I've never played any of the other Myst games, or Uru, so that comparison doesn't really help. Thanks though.

Myst IV doesn't run..

.. on my Inspiron 9100.

The game installs just fine, and the hardware detector/configuration program finds all the hardware just fine..

But when I try to run Myst IV (Revelation) on this bad boy, the game just bombs out, no error messages, no information.

And no support from Ubi for laptop video chips.

Be warned: if you want to play Myst 4, be prepared to run it on a desktop computer with sufficient power.

.. not that my 9100 is lacking for power, with the 128M Radeon 9700.. you'd think that'd be enough. ;-)

I run it beautifully on my 9100 (with the ati-9800) and 1 gig of ram. It does use 3D, though -- its not all pre-rendered, the environments are, but many of the added effects are pure 3D, such as the ship you fly to get the lightning area (can't remember the name).

I have absolutely no lag nor any problems so far and I'm at the "tuning" of the chair -- which I've fixed, but can't seem to get the melody correct yet. (which may seem like non-sense to anyone not playing this amazing game)

I find it pretty hard to believe that they would make a Myst game that requires the latest and greatest, top of the line equipment, they never have, that's not what the games are about. There must be something else wrong.

LOL

Welcome to the future my friend. The Myst MMORPG used a similar version of the engine and it was designed to look gorgeous....at 15-20fps.

Marketing Morons

The original MYST was the best selling game of all time.....literally MILLIONS and Millions of people bought and played the game. MANY of them were also NOT regular game players. The next 2 games in the series, i.e. Riven and Myst III played fine on any computer system out there.

However, with the advent of URU literallly MILLIONS of people were DENIED the ability to play the new games because they didn't have the LATEST and GREATEST video card, OR, like myself, wanted to play it on a Laptop!!

I'm sure you can imagine how much this totally SUCKS.

Even if your laptop DOES have the latest Radeon, etc, BEWARE, because apparently ubisoftbrains DOESN"T want you to play it, because it WON't............................z

It'll mess with your DVD drive.............

And let's not forget this little gem (from the ubisoftbrain site):

Myst IV contains anti copying software, and will interfere with 'some' (read all) DVD writing drives. God only knows what this will do to your DVD drive... ...........................z

dvd drive

so does this mean Myst IV will not run on my laptop if I have the DVD+RW combo drive?
