HP nc8000 vs Acer Ferrari 3200

Thread Starter
Hi!
I'm planning to buy a notebook and was thinking about:

Ferarri 3200 15" TFT SXGA (1400x1050), AMD Athlon 64 2800+ , KN400, 1GB DDRAM, ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 128 MB DDR AGP 8x, 80 GB HDD, ... with 3 year garaty

or

HP-Compaq nc8000 (PF196AA), Pentium M (Dothan) 1700, 1GB RAM, HDD (GB): 40, DVD/CD-RW, TFT 15" (1400x1050), ATI Mobility Radeon 9600 Pro 64 MB, ... with 3 year garaty

The price is similar. Of course Acer is more powerfull, but i'm a bit afraid about quality, service, etc. I'm working with Oracle databases so i also need a powerfull, but also safe system (sure, sometimes a bit gamming and videos) I'm plannig it for 2-3 years.

Thanks a lot...

The quality and service of Acer notebooks are very good, at least their service is good in Europe. AMD64 processors rock when working with databases, and thanks to the NX-bit support in SP2 the security is best in class too. And the Acer Ferrari 3200 is propably the fastest gaming laptop with Mobility Radeon 9700.

Well, Acer service pretty much sucks in Finland.

It seems like the hp would be the best choice for you. It also have a three year internatinal garanty..

To say it simply: ferrari is for the kids with a lot of money and the nc8000 is for the serious office man

Right so you're calling me a kid ?

This kids runs an IT company since 11years.

The last 4 Ferrari's I've sold were to business men, 1 actually bought it to match the colour of his car

I guess you better think twice before launching these remarks.

Hmm it's a few hundred euros more than the cheapest no-name brand laptops of similar hardware. Under 2k in any case, I don't really see why it's considered so expensive :/

3 year garuntee is huge. YOu can take it into any compaq authorized service center. To give you perspective there are probably over 10 within a 3 mile radius from me in So Cal.

actually, nothing wrong with being a kid at heart. most successful people i find have the "kid" side in them, which gives them the creative edge and allows them to really think outside the box (or as someone said, "jump" outside the box).

go kids!!!

Sorry, over reacted yesterday, just got a customer who decided to take out his laptops mobo (how, don't ask me) and bought online another mobo, A DESKTOP ONE !!!

Now he was blaming me that I sold him a laptop with non standard sizes because he couldn't fit it the mobo

Oh man Phantom, what a nightmare!

A concur with your first reaction- I think HP/compaq is pretty bottom of the barrel, in design and build quality, I dont understand thier customers sometimes. Getting more and more like mac owners, except I get more and more calls to repair broken down hp/compaq and now dell laptops, new ones with bad motherboards and whatnot.

I would say go acer, they use better parts inside. Look at Asus though too...

Got a look at the Acer 3200 yesterday... a very nice machine. I might have to take a look at that next time I buy.

The nc8000 is probably better than the Acer Ferrari because it's designed to be a rock-solid, well-thought, usable machine, and not a "I-make-my-friends-drool" laptop.

That being said, the nc8000 has the following shortcomings:

- Makes a lot of noise. You can try to beg the computer or hit it really hard with a baseball bat - been there, done that - but no matter what the fan will be on from about 5 minutes after you startup to the very end of your life (or your Windows session, whichever comes first).
- DVD playback quality makes you think VHS wasn't bad after all.
- Several display-related bugs HP won't admit, even under water torture.

If you can cope with the issues, then get the nc8000.

I have no problems with fan noise or dvd playback. If you want a quality product that is very well supported go with the nc8000.

- Do you mean your fan is off most of the time or you can simply handle it because it's permanently on? There's a difference.
- DVD playback is a known issue, so I doubt I'm the only one to have it here. Maybe you don't have it because you have a nw8000.
