upgrading the M505X screen... possible ?? also random buzzing noise, help!

Well I love everything about my M505X except for the screen. The response time is horrible. I remember when I booted up the laptop for the first time, I said to myself "so THIS is what ghosting looks like". Apparently my first laptop, a Dell Inspiron 8000 bought THREE years ago has a much faster response time! How in the world can that be. The Dell has a IBM UXGA 15'' screen. Sure the contrast level sucks. But it's fast - comparison to my sister's X1000 with 35ms screen looked about the same. I didn't even know they were making sub-50ms screens 3 years ago No wonder I never knew why people complained so much about ghosting and stuff - I always thought I was using a 50ms screen with the Dell, and it looked alright to me.

So... is it even possible to upgrade the M505 screen? Possibly to WSXGA resolution, and better contrast level, but anything faster in response time would be good enough.

Also, I am hearing a random buzzing sound coming from just under the wireless/power status lights. It's coming from the chasis, I guess to the right of the HD mount. At first, I thought it was the HD itself. But I've heard it several times with the HD not doing anything. It almost sounds like electrical intereference... maybe capacitor charging or something like that. But it IS loud. If you're 1.5 feet or 2 ft away you can hear it clearly. It'll come on kinda like fan, randomly and will go away after a while. And it's NOT the fan as far as I can tell, cause there's no air coming out when the noise is on. And I've heard the fan and it's a different sound.

I switched out the stock Fujitsu HD with a Hitachi 5400RPM HD, and the same buzzing noise exists - so it's probably not the HD.

Should I be worried?

Your screen must be one of the 2nd tier ones Gateway used in later released M505Xs
I have no ghosting on my M505x. I was lucky to get an originaly released one from last year that sat in its box on a store room shelf for 9 months. MFD 12/24/03. DVD movies are wonderful and I play many games perfectly(Doom3 FarCry Painkiller Halo URU Hitman Contracts etc....)

One can tell by very closely looking at the pixels with a 6x-8x mag glass.
If the R G and B pixels are NOT split into a top and bottom half you have a lower quality screen. The higher quality screens have split pixels for each R G and B sub pixel.
Most all of the high quality screens have this as their design. Internal electronics yields faster response times and hardly ever a dead pixel can be noticed. Also stuck on pixels are only half as bright and so less noticable.

i would bet that the buzzing is probably going to be your bass boaster. sounds like its on its way to the crapper. next time it starts making the whoomwhoom sound turn the switch off in the front and see if it stops

I've decided not to investigate the screen issue any more. It's highly unlikely I'll be able to do anything about it (within a reasonable budget), and it's not a bad screen in every day use. As long as I don't use another screen with a better response time I'll be fine.

Now for the buzzing sound... it comes on and off, randomly it seems. I've made some new discoveries about it though.

1) When I tried a Momentus 40GB 5400RPM drive in the laptop, the buzzing seems to occur not as often.

2) More importantly, I now believe the buzzing is from the LCD screen!!!!!! More specifically, it's from the backlight. I was checking the back of the laptop for a PS/2 port (which it doesn't have by the way) and the buzzing happend to kick in at that time. Imagine my surprise when I realized the noise came from the screen! The buzz is the kind given off by fluorescent lights... but since it comes and goes, I wonder if this means my laptop's backlight's gonna die soon? The laptop's still under warranty, but I really don't have time to deal with this with school and all.
