Dying HDD

Thread Starter
My harddrive is going out in my 4780. Regretably now, I didn't purchase the extended warranty. Is it possible for me to get some sort of refund on the HD w/o sending my whole system back? I need my computer for work (i work out of home) so I can't really ship the whole thing back. I feel like i'm forced into buying myself a new drive and just eating the cost. Any suggestions, anyone?

Email tech support and ask for them to "Cross Ship" you a new unit. They will nnormally do this as long as the unit is still under the one year warranty. If it is truely out out warranty - you will need to eat the cost for a new drive -- EXCEPT -- that you might be able to RMA the drive to the driver maker (if the drive's warranty period is longer than one year and some are).

what are the signs of a dying HDD?

The last Roar of Hard Drives

There are many ways to tell if a hard drive is about to bite the dust:

1) Windows will not load, and every time you try to reinstall windows the computer will not see the hard drive, no matter what you do

2) When the computer boots, it will see the hard drive as something it is not, when one of my HD's died before it showed itself as a 400 MB hard drive... it was actually a 40 GB drive, although this might also be a mobo problem

3) ANd lastly, the one, tell tale sign your hard drive is about to go kaput is it makes these horrible grinding sounds... kinda a buzz, reminds me of a power saw going through wood, this means the plates of the HD are hitting each other, and you have about a day to try to get everything off of there that you can before it just stops working.... coincidentally, that just happened to me today with my 8790... great....

would a dying HDD or something wrong with the HDD prevent the computer from booting or even POSTing - say stuck heads?
