I will have a HDD replacement on Monday for my 9100 system (80GB 5400rpm hitachi HDD) because my HDD will clicking during idle and it is noisy. the thing i want to ask is if the replacement HDD is a brand new one? or a refurbished one?
I am thinking if it is a refurbished, I wont take it because HDD has a limited lift cycle compared with other devices...also I discoved that under windows system it clicks, but under linux system it just works normal.

Oops. I misread that

This new 9100 came with a nice, silent Toshiba and I didn't even request one this time. Go figure. I thought the Hitachi clicking was abnormal, but after the several attempts at getting a silent one I figured it was normal. Supposedly, it proprietary technology to prevent shock to the hard drive. The noise comes from the parking and unparking of the heads. The firmware isn't supposed to competely silent the sound, but instead make it less audible. It really depends on how sensitive you are to the sound.
