I had applied the new frimware...using featrue tools to switch off all the power saving settings but still clicking....I just disabled the pagefile of windows xp and NOT CLICKING now!!!!
i think it is the problem with windows system...need read HDD frequently for accessing the pagefile . I got 1GB memory so pagefile is useless therefore switch it off and quiet.....................
I just tested my system by surffing the webpage...the hdd only sounds during read the webpape but after the webpage fully loaded no noise...just the spin of the disk!

so if anyone got the same HDD clicking problem just try switch the pagefile off and see what going on!

Just make sure you don't run out of physical memory.

If you say so! Just don't use Photoshop or Painter or any other ram-hungry graphics program. ;0)

BTW: Is your Index service diabled?

yes...already and the Pagefile => I think is more important than the index service....

I wouldn't disable your pagefile under any circumstances...regardless of what you hear, the pagefile is necessary for Windows to operate properly, regardless of the amount of physical memory you have available.

Ehh not entirely correct Joey. I only have 10 mb of page file turned on. MY computer runs fine. There are programs that like knowing that you have a pagefile and that is exactly why I left 10 mb pagefile alone. No probs none whatsoever. I even did some registry tweaking to have my windows xp core moved into memory and my puter is blazing fast.

no i dont think so. if you have over 1GB memory you should disable the pagefile in order to let windows use memory for temp. data, otherwise windows will use pagefile for temp. data and then memory, this also will slow down your laptop

You're right, I apologise. Your answer is more correct...most programs DO require a page file (including the NT kernel, which is why I would never disable it. Read here for more details), so having a small one would be acceptable. But I still say disabling it completely is a bad idea, and wouldn't do it.

I have 1 gig of ram and it is not enough to turn off the page file. Yes if all you do is surf the web but i didn't buy this laptop to surf the web only. I have the clicking Hitachi hd and have tried all that . My games run out of ram with pf disabled. It will also do it while downloading a video or opening high rez pictures. So for me and most that do things other than just surf i wouldn't disable the page file.

I've got the system managed paging file by default under Windows 2003. Could be that only certain Hitachi models exhibit clicking noises with the pagefile enabled.

Well mine clicks no matter if i have a pf enabled or none. So who know. I even installed the new firmware. I should have taken the other hard drive from my 1st 9100 and swapped then as it wasn't the Hitachi drive.

KotOR and Everquest 2 are two games that even with 1GB of memory, you really need a pagefile. Take my word for it.

I have a Gig of RAM and have had my pagefile disabled for quite a while now and have never run into any problems. If your system is configured well it should never run out. Im always playing the most demanding games, never crashed yet.

mmorpg take way more than a gig. They are constantly loading stuff.(so it doesnt really help anyway) I play city of heroes for hours. My system is configured very well. Ive done all the xp tweaks to it. 1 gig of ram isnt a lot like you all think. Mayby several years ago but not now. Im just saying i am one person here that cannot do it with what i do on my laptop.

YAY! i love sloving things! slov slov slov!

Well I'm surprised. It lasted for over two hours of online play. There is still a pf being used though. ? I see no improvement on my hard drive clicking . I think i want a replacement drive.

You know its really strange but after comparing my 7.2K Hitachi to my Fujitsu 4.2K there is honestly no difference at all could something be wrong with my 7.2K drive? They load things exactly the same they both have 8MB cache and the only difference is the Fuji uses 50GB platters where as the Hitachi uses 30GB
