I recently installed a fresh copy, after full NTFS format, of Windows XP HOME (OEM) from DELL to my hard drive. I then installed the latest Dell Notebook Systems Software and Chipset Software on my Dell Inspiron XPS. The Windows XP HOME (OEM) disk also says that it includes service pack 1a. After doing all of this, I then connected my Logitech MX700 cordless optical mouse. I get a 'unknown device' message and after that I get a 'device not recognized' error messages. I then tried several other USB devices since then and I always get the same 'device not recognized' message.
I thought maybe it was the bluetooth, so I removed it AND the software for it from my XPS. Same error message. I called Dell Tech support and they said NEW MOTHERBOARD needed. Dell just put in a new motherboard just 2 weeks ago. Even after that new motherboard install every USB and the bluetooth device worked! I lost the USB ports and the bluetooth after I used the latest Dell Quickset Software. That software re-activated my 'system standby' mode. The PC went into standby mode 20 minutes later. I then tried to come back out of standby by moving the mouse, no dice. I hit the space bar and that made the XPS come out of standby. After a restart, NONE of the USB ports OR bluetooth worked. I tried various things; installing SP2 from M$ (didn't work...wouldn't install), a restore back to pre-SP2 install (wouldn't boot no more...got a blue-screen 'winsrv' compontent error). So after that I did the fresh install like I said earlier in this message.
I am at an empass. I do not want another motherboard put in because I do not think this issue is hardware related. Oh, the motherboard that was put in 2 weeks ago was because I accidentally broke the PC-Card tab and the only way to fix the plastic tab was to do a new motherboard. Which Dell did. What can I do? Dell is coming Monday for the new motherboard, but watching them put in a new motherboard makes me sweat bullets! Is there a very specific install procedure for the device drivers CD? I called Dell XPS Tech support twice and they said this;
1st) OS install,
2nd) Dell Notebook Systems Software install,
3rd) Restart,
4th) Chipset Software install,
5th) Restart,
6th) Video Driver install,
7th) Restart,
8th) Install all other device drivers from the Dell Device Drivers CD that came with my XPS notebook. That is all. I have done all of that twice! On the second time, I left the USB mouse plugged in during the WHOLE procedure, still no go. I feel like I am in Dell Hell. LOL.
I have following specs; Dell Inspiron XPS 3.4ghz w/H/T, 60gb Hitachi Drive, ATI Radeon Mobility 9800, Win XP Home edition, A03 Bios version, Bluetooth (not connected now), WXGA screen. NO Windows Updates. Only the Sp1a that came with the OEM Win XP Home installation CD from Dell.
