Sony S170 died today!

My daughter was using my Sony S170 this morning and it suddenly just shutdown. I attempted to turn it back on but it would seldom stay on for more than 5-10 seconds, then completely shut off.

I removed the battery and tried to run it on AC only, but the same thing happened. Also tried to start it with just the battery, but same thing. I even pressed the reset button on the bottom of the laptop but no difference.

Finally called support and they are sending me a box to send it in for repair.

Any ideas??? This laptop is all of 3-4 weeks old and has been used less than 20 hours total. I was planning on taking this on vacation to Cancun, but not sure about reliability at this stage.

That is strange. Any ideas what might have caused this? It's not possible something got spilled in it or damaged?
If it was working perfectly okay, then all of a sudden stopped working, I'd say something definately happened either from hardware failure or human error.

Hi there's an on going issue with sony laptops mainly the intel chip set. Been there done that. As far as I see it many sony's look good over priced and give to many problems. Once again thats my view.
You may find more info on random shutdown on sony vaio's over@ vaio village it's a helpful source for issues with sony PC's.
Our company had GR,Z and S series over say 3 years and our company sent them all back and now using dare I say it Toshiba and Dell laptops now...Still best thing about sony is the screen's...
Hope vaio village can help...

Just an update.

It's been a couple of hours since this behavior and I was able to restart it and it booted to Windows normally. I thought... "great, problem over." I went to the kitchen to check on my spagetti and came back and it was off. I thought... "I know I turned over the power save modes" (it's usually the first thing I do), but then maybe I forgot. I pushed the power button and it asked for my password. Before I could type it in, it shutdown again and would not boot up.

Something very strange with this laptop.

What we have here is a perfect demonstration of Sony's world-known reliability.

In other words, don't buy Sony. It's bad. Evil. Shoo.

I think that's an overzealous statement.

I have that kind of problem before but it is my Toshiba laptop.
And the problem find out to be a HDD.
So please check whatever your HDD is working fine or not.
Try swaping new HDD in and see if it shutdown again.

Really pisses me off because I just got through getting everything installed and copied to it for my trip to Cancun. Now, I don't think I trust taking it on a trip. Hopefully, the shipping box will show up tomorrow.
