3790 wsxga wuxga side-by-side pics - Page 3

Very useful pics Jon. I just ordered my 3790 with WSXGA the other day from PCT. You don't have a Nushield on yours do you?

John to put it bluntly, you're the man!!

This puts me 100 times more at ease.

It's still weird how the WSXGA+ looks so much more vibrant then the WUXGA.

This makes me want to lean towards getting the WSXGA+ but I have a week to decide.

Thanks again for the work, I'm sure it answered alot of questions from potential buyers

Absolutely!

John's original post says that the WUXGA looks like crap on any resolution except 1920X1200.

Does this mean that ATI's stretch will not neatly and clearly double the resolution of 800X600, and produce vertical bars for 1600X1200?

If anyone asks what I'd use 800X600 for, there's only one answer: classic gaming!

No nushield. I'd love to have the protection but I don't care for the glare.

Roger, I was referring to setting different resolutions on the desktop only. Text & icons were blurry at anything that we tried but native on both screens. With gaming it is more like on a crt monitor. 16x12 looks the best, 1024 looks good, 800 looks kinda blocky, and 640 well, only if you have to. The doom pic I posted is 1024x768 and it looks pretty good. I would guess a true widescreen ratio on a game would be amazing but I haven't seen one yet.

Whats the weight on this baby with the battery obviously.!?

And wheres the best place to buy this if I am from Canada? (cheapest)

One thing to still consider is whether or not you will eventually get an external USB HDTV Tuner and/or a future DVD-ROM that's either bluray or HD-DVD. Only the WUXGA will display them at native resolution while the WSXGA will convert the resolution.

At least that's how I understand it. But of course by the time such things are readily available and worth purchasing, the 3790 will probably be obsolete anyway.

Benchmarks added to post #1.

Thanks. Great thread. If i were gettign the 3790 i'd go for the ultra just for the extra real estate. (I can read small) Both screens are gettting excellent reviews.

Not to hijack the topic of this thread, but are these becnhmark scores good? What would be "average numbers"
good for a laptop, average for a desktop.

John, which screen would you say looks better while gaming at 1024x768?

All we tried was Doom3 but the wuxga looked a little better.

I have no reason not to believe you, John, when you say that the WSXGA looks a bit more vibrant than the WUXGA in person, and I know that photos aren't always the best reference for determining this - "in person" is the best way to see it.

But when looking at your photos, I guess I have to take the road less traveled, because to me, in your photos the WUXGA on the right looks better to my eyes.

The WSXGA on the left is the one that looks like it's a tad bit milky and washed out in several of the photos, whereas the WUXGA is the one that looks more vibrant to me - the colors seem to be deeper, richer. Not in every photo, but in several, especially in the doom picture.

I can see a difference in the whites - the WSXGA whites look a bit whiter in some cases, and in others the WUXGA seems a bit whiter. Just too hard to get an accurate feel with photos. But overall, the WUXGA just looks a bit better to me. Both screens appear to be at the exact same angle, so I couldn't blame any discrepancies in screen quality on that factor when looking at these pictures. Maybe lighting could have played a factor here when you were snapping some of the pictures, but clearly not in all.

Each to his own. I prefer UXGA myself, so that's what I'll be waiting for with the system I'm interested in.

Thanks a lot for snapping all those pictures. At the very least, they serve as a great reference for the difference in resolutions.

Just got my baby today, and is she ever sexy. Wooowe. I, for one, am glad I did not get the WUXGA. The icons and the text are so small I absolutely have to wear my reading glasses. Reading the forum is not much trouble, font size is good. However, other things in other programs are very very small.
My 2 cents worth is this: If you've got great/perfect vision, and you are not going to be up all night infront of the screen, go for the WUXGA. Otherwise, save a few bucks and get this gorgeous WSXGA screen. No poking, no dead pixels, no light seepage. Just a picture perfect screen.
Now I'm going to go change my sig.

I'm jealous now! Congrats on your dream machine flamme.

I'm still contemplating whether or not I should get the WSXGA or the WUXGA.

Thanks, and good luck on your decision. It really is a personal choice. It took me 2 months to decide, and it was John's pictures comparing the two that helped me choose.

That's what the pics are for One, to try to help you figure out which one is best for you. You are correct in the Doom pic, which is why I said it looks better in wuxga. I don't think this is attributed to the lighting, probably because of the screen brightness difference. In a couple pics such as this one:

the white out or milkiness can be attributed to reflection.

Take a close look at the photoshop photo and especially the objects on the right hand side of the photo. This may give you a better indication of the difference in colorfulness/vibrance.
