Hiyah all!

Im looking at the Inspiron 8600, are there any bad comments about this laptop? Im kinda new to laptops so i need your help. Anyway here's what I configured so far...

Inspiron 8600
Intel® Pentium®M Processor 745 (1.80GHz/400MHz FSB)
15.4 WSXGA+
Microsoft® Windows® XP Home Edition
is there a way to remove the OS?
256MB DDR SDRAM 1 Dimm
256, because i plan on buying corsairs outside and selling the ones built-in to the DELL
128MB DDR ATI's MOBILITY® RADEON™ 9600 PROTURBOATI128M dont they have a 9700?
60GB Hard Drive at 7200RPM
this is the hitachi one right?
CD ROM/DVD ROMFREE 24X CD-RW/DVD Combo Drive with Sonic RecordNow Upgrade!
Intel® PRO/Wireless 2200 Internal Wireless (802.11 b/g, 54Mbps)
72 WHr Primary Battery
Dell Leather Carrying Case
1Yr Ltd Warranty, 1Yr Mail-In Service, and 1Yr Technical Support
Color ChoiceGraphite Swirl QuickSnap™ Cover
Dell™ TrueMobile™ 300 Bluetooth Internal Card

it comes out to $2149
but then i applied a cupon which removes $400
so the TOTAL is: $1749

well any advise on how to lower the cost would be nice, and any feedbacks on the system would be greatly appreciated too

Might as well upgrade to XP Pro. I have it on my 8600 and I like it better than XP Home, but both are good.

I enjoy mine.

I thought he was asking for ways to lower the price, not raise it. Anyway, it's hard to tell what to lower without knowing what an average day for this laptop would be. Are you a gamer, because if not, consider lowing the video card. Are you into CPU intensive programs/games, or can you consider lowering the processor. It is hard to tell without knowing what you are into.

good deal
I have somewhat similar (not the 60Gb and better wireless card) for 1500.
And i dont think you should take the dell leather case, just buy one NCLE2, much better. Fit tight for a backpack

No way to remove the OS. I tried to get Dell to shave off some money when I was ordering mine... but they won't do it.

My feedback would be to skip XP altogether.

Well, im actually gonna use it for work, spreadsheets and email :P but i do want to play games on the side plus watch some dvds

Is there any other site the can take off the OS? like what PCTorque does for Sager?

If you're going to use Dell, no, you will need to get XP something as your OS. If you don't get a Dell, that may be a different story.

This thread is helping me also. I have one question THough.

I am interested in the same laptop. If I plan on using it for surfing, DVD burning, and some spreadsheets. Is it worth getting the Centrino M, or is the P4 a better choice?

Thanks

I personally think the mobile processor is a better choice for the laptop for a couple reasons, battery life and less heat. A friend of mine bought a compaq for school. It's just a Celeron processor, but the laptop is thicker, heavier, and the battery lasts about 2-3hrs vs the 4+ hrs that mines lasts doing some of the same things you're talking about: surfing, spreadsheets, etc.

Stubby,
The 8600c only comes with the mobile processor. The P4 is not an option.

Yeah I know, I was just thinking maybe the 9100 instead. Sorry.

I also wanted a DVI port for my Dell 1800FP. The 8600 doesn't have one. The p100 does.

This laptop would also be my main machine at home. And I am not much of a gamer

You might want to get more RAM! Especially if you play games, 256 MB is the minimum, I would reccomend 512 MBs, or 384 if you don't play crazy games (like D3)
Try to stick with at least 512. XP will barely run with 256. (If you go with more than 512, do NOT buy it through Dell!)
Yeah he said he was gonna go with an aftermarket option for RAM.
