Its a 9000 with agp 8x and flexfix packaging i.e. depending on implementation it could be drop in upgradeable to a 9600pro.

Hmmmmm that makes things very intresting.I found new compaq x1000 and with 1.5 centrino and radeon 9200 512 mb ram it comes like 1750 plus 100 bucks mail-in rebate and shiping is also free, also I didnt mention that display is wide aspect 12.4.Sounds good.Maybe I go for it and later I can pop in 9600.Thanks for the information about gpu!

Here's the big question, will compaq offer a drop in upgradeable 9600pro or have they decided to design it to accept one?

the 9200 claims to be a flexfit part which depending on thier design means it is upgradeable to any other flexfit part i.e. 9600pro.

If this is the case anyone absolutely needing to buy now but trying to hold off for the 9600pro just found thier solution.

there is also the HP nx7000 with the same card. Don't know if the widescreen 15.4 is better than the Compaq one or the same.

arent the centrinos not compatible with DX9 based cards (the9600) right now because of the mobo? I hear a whole new centrino processor/motherboard combo is coming out in november/december with even more cache and dx9 compatible. But if this is true it wont matter if you have flexfit graphics card cause your mobo wont support the card you could upgrade to, even if it would theoretically fit.

Tried to get some help in searching around(didn't work) anyway I think I found our answer. There is already one Centrino laptop with a DX9 GPU...

Even if the current implementation of Banias and its mobo aren't compatible with DX9 GPUs as have been claimed by some (though the Dell Precision M60 with its Quadro FX Go700 implementation seemed to have shot down this claim), is it possible to make the case that all isn't lost, since current "Centrino" owners in theory may be able to upgrade to a Dothan chip down the road, at least according to an interpretation of this article:

http://www.e-insite.net/electronicne...cleid=CA277846

"Chandrasekher said the company has such faith in Centrino that a 90nm iteration, codenamed Dothan, is being prepped release. This will allow increases to the speed of the processor, with a lower voltage per chip and a 30 percent reduction in cost, he said. Dothan will be fully compatible with Centrino, allowing the 90nm chip to be slotted in to any Centrino designs. This will ensure Dothan's rapid ramp-up, Chandrasekher said."

Nice find OnTheGo!

Althought I don't think it would help this problem much, if there really is a problem in all likelyhood it is chipset or voltage related.

On the other hand it's nice to know that there is an upgrade path which should at the most require a bios flash.
