Opinion on Sony's Desktop Vaio - Liquid Cooled

Hadn't built any systems in about 9 mos so out of it for a bit.

However, talked to a friend who just bought one of SONY's VAIO R Series desktops and he loves it.

SONY Link to VAIO Desktops

The biggest thing that I thought was impressive was that they are "liquid cooled" (they say "Advanced Cooling and Acoustic Technology" or "Advanced Liquid Cooling System") but for any large manufacturer, I hadn't see this before except from more 'specialized' vendors or build-it-yourself types.

So, I searched but didn't see anyone talking about this -- is it impressive or not or just fluff that I'm seeing.

My friend said is it SUPER quiet and just rocks on speed.

Anyway, it looks cool and wondering what others think about this. Also, MEDIA OS is what is available ... is this a "step-up" from XP Pro or just same OS but had more Media stuff on it? Not familiar with it but understand concept.

Thanks for any input/thoughts... OT

Are you positive those are liquid cooled?

The Sony is nice.... but only the processor is watercooled.. at least the one that I had a Best Buy Employee rip open

They are pretty nice lookin' though..
And if money is no option, always buy Sony

Sony VIAOs are rip-offs. Way more overpriced than even an Alienware.

Only by what my buddy told me and then SONY's web page here:

"Advanced Liquid Cooling System
The heat pipe cooling system pulls heat away from the CPU, dissipating it through an exchanger, ensuring ultimate performance without the noise or hassle of alternative cooling systems."

ON SONY's Web Page

Well, for around $2500 or so you get a pretty nicely equipped SONY but the AlienWare system is around $4700. I didn't configure either to the "t" to make sure they are exact but just quickly looked at the numbers.

I'll try to look at a comparison more and see if the apples can be compared and make sure they are configured similar and see what the price are.

But, just off-hand, looks like AW is quite more $$s than SONY.

I don't know if I'll get one of these or not -- was just looking for feedback and experience from anyone on it. Also, will probably start looking at how these guys (esp SONY) are cooling to compare on what it would be for a do-it-yourselfer!

Thanks.

I've seen the Sony Vaio R series in person. They look very cheap, when I first saw photos of it I thought it looked cool and was a good concept, seperate the processor from the rest of the components to promote better cooling but the matte black case looks and feels very cheap. I had a Vaio Digital Media PC that was built much better and looked better too.

doing it yourself is alot better than any premade kit. that includes apple and alienware. in terms of performace to price.

Way more overpriced for what you get for your money. And the $4700 figure must've been for an ALX, which is itself overpriced.

Yes, you're correct -- that was an ALX ... It was the easier to find that showed a liquid cooling sys.
