Help! This has probably been asked numerous times. I've searched the board, but wanted some more updated info.

I need A LOT of extra hard drive space to supplement my Acer Aspire 1681WLMi.
Looked into external hard drive. then saw external enclosure and internal hard drive. whats the difference?
I also have firewire 1394, now im worried about 'is mine minifirewire or standard?'
budget is significant to me.

me and my sister uses a lot of space, she will be getting her own laptop soon. so do you guys recommend we share 1 external enclosure + internal hd or should we get 2?

also, how is the portability of it? I'm sure the combo needs an AC supply, but im thinking about long trips like a vacation. thanks guys

Here is the one I'm currently using. It looks great, and has the ability for multiple users to hook into it via Firewire. I've got a 200GB WD Caviar drive in it. You can view more detailed specs and price HERE

It's a little dusty.

I use a 300gb maxtor inside a Sanmax external enclosure. All you need is a plug for the enclosure and plugs are not hard to find.

A 200GB WD 7200RPM IDE drive runs about $110 OEM (no manuals, cables, mounting screws) or about $130 Retail.

That's exactly what the one I posted above has. It's more expensive, but it's great. I've heard a lot of bad stories about cheap enclosures. Like the hard drive melting the enclosure.

yes! me too (not about heat, but buggy chipsets). That's why I bought one that has the 911 (just call the emergency and you know what to buy ) chipset. Now, I'm just repeating: everyone recommended me to buy that one to avoid errors on the data... so... don't save your $.01, putting in risk a $110 piece...

edit: and drawmonster: clean that

I got a hitachi 250 gig/7200rpm/8MB from fry's for ~$80AR/After Tax.
I just bought the Venus DS FW/USB2.0 enclosure from zipzoomfly for $59.
So I paid about $140 for a 250Gig ext drive.

I sold a 120 gig for $65 and a 80 gig for $46 to help pay for it.

if you need a cable for it, buy from www.acortech.com i got a 4pin to 6 pin FW cable for $3 shipped! use coupon PRICEWATCH for free shipping on some stuff. I wasn't sure if the enclosure i bought came with the right cable, but this one cost less than a cup of coffee! so it will be here when i get my enclosure.

at zipzoom i also got 2 day fedex free, sweet
