Upgrading VGN-A195

Thanks to Dark Angel ^^^ I now have a pdf version of the service manual.
The manual is not the one that specifically convers my A150 (there are two manuals, this is the wrong one)... but everything is "almost" exactly the same as my correct paper version. So without buying a legit paper copy, this is the closest you get to looking at the schematics of the laptop.
Drop me a PM with your email addy and I'll send it to you.

Hmm I definitely would be interested in the digital copy eventough it may not exactly be the correct one for my A195EP. I was trying to find out how to upgrade my RAM and got quite different informations. According to the Sony datasheet that came with my laptop, all the A195 and A197 models only can handle 1GB of RAM. If I check the corsair website they only know about the A197 and say that it can handle up to 2GB. On the Kingston site they state for the A197 up to 2GB and for the A195 up to 1GB. So I thought I would try anyhow and install a 1GB SODIMM PC2700 CL2.5 from Kingston and no matter where I put it and if it is the only module or another one is in there, the computer simply refuses to even boot at all. Since the whole A series seems to be quite the same hardware platform and I can't believe Sony put two different motherboards in the A195 and A197 respectively I wonder if there is some jumper or something that screws the system if a 1GB module is in there. Of course it also might be that the Kingston module is responsible for the problem but it seems to work fine in another computer.

I really would hate to have to get two 512MB modules to put in and throw away both 256MB modules I now have. Having 1.25 GB seems much more interesting

( im like o **** no im gonna kill someone). i have been looking for a place that can order these parts for this type of model and ill ay for it because sending it to sony will take months and cost much more money than it would take just to buy it from someone else.
Since you are not saying from where you are this may be of no help but in the begin of this thread there is mentioning of the
Sony DAPC
site. Unfortunately they won't ship to locations outside the US.

Overclocking attempt

The previous comment containing the rumor about removing all memory and rebooting in order to get more BIOS options is not true. I have not tried looking for a reset CMOS jumper on the MB.

Hey guys, sorry to revive this old thread but I recently had my VGN-A690 Sony Vaio's motherboard crap out on me rendering the laptop useless. Luckily I still have a few months left on my BestBuy warranty and should be able to return it and get a new laptop since their policy is to replace a whole laptop rather than a motherboard.
But before I bring it in I want to pull the hard drive and back up everything on it. From the research I've done, it sounds like a pretty complicated process and I want to make sure I do it right so as not to void the warranty.
Does anyone still have the manual that was discussed in this thread? If so, I'd really really really appreciate if you could send it to me. Please PM me if you have it. Also, does anyone have an updated link to that German website that showed the pics of someone changing out their HD? It doesn't seem to be up anymore and I'm now kind of stuck without any guides or pics to help me.
Any help anyone can offer would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks!

Why don't you back it up with Norton Ghost? That way, you don't have to pull your harddrive. Pulling it, I assume, would void the warranty.

Help! My Sony Vaio VGN-A190 won't start (again). It's doing this thing with the flashing lights and clicking DVD drive. First time it happened, Sony said it was a hard drive failure. After I freaked and realized it was no longer under warranty (it was my dad's), I found out how to remove the keyboard. Before, I just took off the keyboard, made sure everything was plugged in tight and it would start up just fine. However, this time nothing seems to work so could you send me that manual you have so I can figure out what is where. I'm a grad student, just started student teaching today and NEED WHAT'S ON MY HARD DRIVE!!!! HELP!!!

You say that you have a service manual for the vgn A-150.  I sure could use a copy.  I am going to pull out the hard drive and maybe replace it.........I continue to get the blue screen upon every boot up...........No data is on the hard drive and I can't seem to access it.  The dvd player isn't being recognized at all, and when I try to use an external it also isn't recognized.  frustrated, but not done attempting to get this laptop up and running again...........

Thanks
