Overclocking problem

I've noticed that the latest BIOS for the 5680 does not like being overclocked at all. Overclocking the 9600 Pro Turbo at all causes the screen to be all messed up and not viewable upon coming out of hibernation/standby.

WoW !!!

this certainly did the trick for me !!!
been without DVD playback for quite some time now and finally decided to look for a fix.

Just an FYI:

I had a problem running Windows Vista Beta 2 on my NP5680. Video was extremely slow and choppy, and installation took forever. The initial solution was to "disable" the Radeon video item in the device manager, but the video was of course not optimal (slow refresh) and no Aero Glass...

After stumbling on this thread, I gave the 10S bios update a try.

That worked! If you have an NP5680 and can't run Windows Vista well, flash your bios to 10s. Worked for me, and the computer now has a Vista performance rating of 4, which is plenty for the new Vista glass UI.

fwiw,

not sure what version of vista you are using, but there is a marked improvement in release 5472 (available to beta testers).

My guess is that you are using the 5472 as the improvement was significant, and I am pretty certain the performance rating prior to that was a 3.6 or something

I was seriously doubting whether I might upgrade because even though VISTA runs on the 5680 with the 10s bios, I felt the performance just was not pleasant.

I still await further performance tweaks...the amount of time VISTA spends hitting the harddrive even with 1gb of memory makes it a little rough on the 5400 rpm drives, but VISTA is now more than tolerable on this three year old laptop....

amazing, I think. I was just working on a brand new thinkpad and I really don't think the performance quite matches up with this oldie but goodie laptop

Video Playback is squeezed

Someone pointed out to me that ATI now has the latest Cat drivers for notebooks, including Sager, so I uninstalled Omega Drivers and Radlinker and installed the latest Cat drivers.
Now I have 2 probs (which may not be related):
1. When I play avi and mpg, the video is scaled about 80% vertically. When I play these files in Quicktime they play properly, so I know there is a problem with the Windows video subsystem.

2. At bootup, I get this error:

Can not load low level device driver. Please restart application!

Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Mitch

07/24/06 Update:
I uninstalled the ATI drivers and the video playback problem went away. Then I installed the latest Omega drivers and the video playback remains correct. Draw your own conclusions...

I'm not sure this is a relvent thread, but I would uninstall in add remove control panel, drop into safe mode, run drivercleanerpro and then reinstall the omega drivers

The guy who makes the omega driver uses the most current ati drivers when he mods them and gets them up within hours of ati (he is a beta tester for ati), so you are not using "old drivers" when using Omega

I needed to use this BIOS on a 5680/D500P motherboard and now when I try to install XP, the windows installation is telling me that the 80GB drive is only 6GB. On top of that, it can't even format the 6GB partition.

Any ideas?

once again, I am stunned that this thread is still alive and people still are downloading this bios. wow

There is no reason why this bios would effect your ability to format the drive or have windows read it as a 6gb drive. What does the bios screen tell you?

Where did this drive come from? Is it the original drive or a new drive? Was it originally installed by you with Windows or did it come with Window preinstalled

The BIOS screen is saying that the drive is 80GB. Which is why I find it odd that the Windows installaition says it's 6GB.

The drive is a blank replacement drive because the original drive failed about a month ago. It is not the original.

I plugged the drive into an IDE port on a desktop using a laptop-to-desk adapter and started an XP installation. The installer indicated that the drive was 80GB.

So why would the XP install indicate 6GB on the laptop after doing the BIOS flash?

It shouldn't...doesn't make sense unless the drive had been formatted previously in a non-standard way.

Since you have a 2.5 to 3.5 adapter, put it back in their and use disk management to partition and format it, then during the XP install on the new laptop, simply choose LEAVE DISK AS IS (the third option below format and quick format).

It was an OEM drive with no additional software. I used Acronis Disk Director while it was plugged in to desktop and formatted it but it still showed up as 6GB on the laptop. I also tried to use Acronis Disk Director to partition the drive on the laptop but it would not get past the loading stage. If I had another laptop drive, I could check to see if the problem is with the drive but since it appears to be read correctly when connected to a desktop motherboard, my only conclusion is that there is an issue with the laptop.

I even tried leaving the drive connected to the desktop and using the Windows install CD to format it. Upon returning the drive to the laptop, the installation still reflects a 6gb drive of an 'unknown' format type. There seems to be some sort of disconnect between what the BIOS sees and what Windows sees. Almost like there is some sort of hard drive interface issue.

Is there another BIOS version available? I have not been able to find one. The one on the manufacturer web site is for the wrong motherboard even though it claims it is for the 5680. When I used it, it turned the screen to gibberish. I had to make a floppy ISO with CD-ROM drivers and the 5680 BIOS from here to revert things back. But that's when the Windows install problem began. If I know the original BIOS version, I could try that.
