Since you have a 2.5 to 3.5 adapter, put it back in their and use disk management to partition and format it, then during the XP install on the new laptop, simply choose LEAVE DISK AS IS (the third option below format and quick format).

It was an OEM drive with no additional software. I used Acronis Disk Director while it was plugged in to desktop and formatted it but it still showed up as 6GB on the laptop. I also tried to use Acronis Disk Director to partition the drive on the laptop but it would not get past the loading stage. If I had another laptop drive, I could check to see if the problem is with the drive but since it appears to be read correctly when connected to a desktop motherboard, my only conclusion is that there is an issue with the laptop.
I even tried leaving the drive connected to the desktop and using the Windows install CD to format it. Upon returning the drive to the laptop, the installation still reflects a 6gb drive of an 'unknown' format type. There seems to be some sort of disconnect between what the BIOS sees and what Windows sees. Almost like there is some sort of hard drive interface issue.
Is there another BIOS version available? I have not been able to find one. The one on the manufacturer web site is for the wrong motherboard even though it claims it is for the 5680. When I used it, it turned the screen to gibberish. I had to make a floppy ISO with CD-ROM drivers and the 5680 BIOS from here to revert things back. But that's when the Windows install problem began. If I know the original BIOS version, I could try that.
