DVD Burner won't write DVD's (does CDs though)

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. I am now unable to burn to a DVD. I have the 2x pioneer model. In the past, I had no difficulties. It does burn to CD media however.

I called Sager, who informed me that it was likely a result of installing SP2- not a hardware problem, since it still bruns to CD media I have a Shuttle XPC and made the same SP2 update to it, but it has no trouble with the DVD burning.

Before undertaking a major effort to resolve this (like reconstituting the hard drive to pre SP2 with my Drive Image software), I thought I'd see if anyone had an idea of how to correct this.

Thanks in advance!

My first question would be: Are you using the same program and media to burn the DVD. If not, that could be the problem. DVD writers work with some media; however, will not work will all media.

I don't believe that SP2 would be "the culprit"; however, the software employed AND SP2 is a possibility.

Last question: Are you a smoker or are you using the unit in a room that tends to collect a lot of "gunk" in the air (Kitchen is exampled)?? If so, the lens, laser, or mirror for the DVD portion of the unit may be fouled up.

How long has it been since you last burned a DVD succesfully?

Yeah, I was using all the same programs which worked before. None of the ones that can burn to a DVD work. I updated most of them recently to no avail. I don't smoke and the laptop nevers sees a smoky, or dusty area.

I am trying an SP2 uninstall to see if that helps. If not, I'll send it back to Sager for a checkout.

Thanks for the input!

I reformatted and reloaded the hard drive and the DVD still doesn't burn DVDs. I sent it back to Sager.

I'm having the same problem with the same drive (Pioneer DVR-K12RA) I'm getting a "Power Calibration Error", attributed by most people on the net to cheap media. I've tried a couple of different brands now and still no dice. I have never burned a DVD on my 8790 so I don't know if it's being caused by my SP2 install, which has been flawless so far.

G-Omaha, this forum is setup for non-editing. Look at the bottom of the screen.

I received the power calibration error message as well. I reinstalled the original software and still no good. Wherre it worked before, it no longer works - must be the unit or other hardware interface.

It is a Sgaer right now for service.

I'll be interested in your experience with Sager regarding your optical drives, particularly the turnaround time and whether they upgrade your equipment or give you the same model as a replacement.

earthvacation, did you get your 8790 back, or do you have any further information on why the drive does not burn DVDs? If you got it back, how long was the turnaround?

Hi. They still have the laptop. They called me to say they were able to burn a couple of DVD's with it. I was very surprised to say the least. However, they were using dvd-R media. My media was the +R variety, which they hadn't tried to burn to. Apparently, mine was having trouble with this kind of media. I am expecting them to return the laptop with a replacement DVD this week, and not an upgraded one either.

Honestly, I am a little disappointed with the tech help. The guy that I have spoken with is of the "know it all" variety who seems to assume users don't know what they are talking about.

Hm, that's very interesting. I had problems burning DVD-R media. Haven't tried +R. No problems with CD-R. Anyway, please post when you get it back and let us know what they did, if anything.

The DVD burner is real picky about DVD+R media. I tried some 8X ones, and it doesn't even recognize the media. 8X DVD-R's work fine. Brand name was Ridata.

earthvacation, did you get your laptop back?

Hi. I received the laptop and the DVD was replaced. It would do everything but write to +R media. That has been fixed. However, the techs created a new problem. The case was apparently reworked and the display is erratic as a result. I am sending it back for them to fix their mistake.

So far, not too impressed with their tech support!

Did they replace it with the same model or a different one?

Thats a problem older DVD-Burner have with 8x media nonregarding the manufacturer.
If you update your drive with a new firmware the burner will work with that medias.
Mine a toshiba sd-r6372 in my clevo D870P (the same as a sager8790) reported "media is write protected".
I will install the firmware tomorrow and will report if the problem is fixed.

with a good original bavarian beer
