Windows Xp generates alot of crap and using net just increases it..I have to empty temp and cookies run adaware and spybot daily to keep on top. Also I disable unneeded tasks, and dont run themes within windows xp i live on classic with icons hidden and no wallpaper I mean how long are you exactly looking at your desktop lol..

I Prefer performance and power to go into my games and internet applications when and if i choose to run them, also while im here nortons internet security is a resource hog so check what your running in sys tray as well matey cause stuff whih runs on bootup can gobble resources...

lol... i think he just wants to start a riot...

that said, winxp has been the most stable and versatile windows os so far
win2k has massive driver and app compatibility problems

i hate windows (and all things microsoft) as much as you do, if not more. i installed linux on my comp about a 1 1/2 months ago, and it is the best thing i've ever done. SO stable, fast, looks nice... everything. i almost never use windows now. btw, the distro i have is suse 9.1 pro. i tried mandrake 10, but didn't like it as much.

I think it depends on which distro you have, what kinda junk you have in your kernel and so on. Try Yoper. Super fast and stable I like it alot. Or, if you're an uber user, try gentoo. but goot luck with that. My first and only try at installing it, I spent about 5 hours installing and still screwed it up. But, for all you gentoo users, excellent distro if you're good.

I tried Fedora Core 2 and it was slow as heck. miserable. I dont know why, but it was. XP was ok for me. Yoper flies!

suse and mandrake are the easiest to install distro's imo... and i've installed many. suse, mandrake, yoper, slackware, and fedora core. liked suse the most overall though.

WinME is still the best!

Only 5 hours installing. I guess I will have to try gentoo. Try debian for some masochism.

Ok. Here’s what I think...

Win95 sucks. It is way unstable.

Win98 is better than 95, but c'mon, it still sucks. You have to agree.

WinME is on crack, and I heard it was the worst of all the Windows versions ever made.

Win2000 is probably the best version of all the Windows out there. I have never seen or heard of a Win2000 machine coming to a grinding halt like 98 and XP do sometimes.

WinXP (Pro & Home) is probably the best all-around OS out there, for the same reasons already expressed. It might not be as stable as Win2000 (even though its based off it) but it comes close. It still is not a very good OS because, well Microsoft made it. There are still a ridiculous number of holes in the system and eventually everyone gets a BSOD and a Memory Dump and a resetting and/or mysterious deletion of their user profile (trust me, that one sucks).

Linux is way more stable than WindowsXP. It is also more secure. But it is harder to use and you loose out on all the Windows programs you have because they don’t work with it and most don’t have Linux versions (yet).

Lindows (Now Lindspire, lost Lawsuit) is a great idea ... on paper. The actual OS Lindows is a joke. It doesn’t work, I tried it. Please, don’t fall for the gimmick.

OS X is another great operating system that I also have heard of being very stable. This thread is the first one where I have heard of a version of OS X crashing at all.

BeOS was ... interesting. A nice thing to play around with, but not really for anything useful that any other OS could do better. I played around with BeOS for a little bit, but it didn’t do anything special that I haven’t seen before (also I found it to be super-stable too. Apps crash, but the OS refuses to)

That’s my synopsis.

depends on how you work WinXP I guess. When it takes an entire day to tweak after installation and 20+ minutes of maintenance every day, it better be a really good OS.

Bsods w/memory dumps are usually rooted in hardware issues. Especially the infamous "IRQ not less than or equal" bsod which is usually memory related. I find another big culprit is cheap a$$ power supplies. I only use Enermax and good quality name brand memory and can't remember the last bsod or crash of any type. My Domain Controller is running Server 2003 and I only shut it down once a month to blow it out with canned air. My other computers run xp pro and 2000 and they are rock solid. Yea, I have six Microsoft certs, among other things, but I have not done any voodo to my machines to make them work like a swiss watch 24/7. I've been running my Sager 5660 for the last two years, first with Server 2000, then with 2000 and now with XP Pro, and I have never had to fix a crash or reinstall because it is a good machine.

There you go. Learn how to maintain your machines folks. Machines don't maintain themselves (yet, though when they do I wonder if they can be even called machines)

everyone is saying how hard linux is to use. when i 1st installed it, i was amazed at how much easier suse was to use than everyone made it out to be. you don't have to know how to program, you don't have to be very computer literate. i find it so much easier to use than windows, now whenever i boot into windows (another advantage of linux is that you can dual-boot if you need windows for something) i find that it is is counter-intuitive. everything is so much more complicated than it needs to be.

sure there are more programs being made for windows, but 95% of those programs are complete junk. for most people though, linux comes with almost every program they need, all for free. it comes with open office, which has a word, excel, and powerpoint equivolent. it comes with an internet browser (albeit not the best one, imo firefox is the best and very easy to install). it comes with some games, and even an image editor that has many of the same features that photoshop has. it also has a program for burning cd's or dvd's, for chatting, and just about anything else.

if you want to try linux out you can get a live cd that requires no installation or harddrive partitioning. http://linuxiso.org/distro.php?distro=2 click the one that says live, then burn the image onto a cd. reboot your comp with the cd in the drive, and tell it to boot from cd.
