Acer Ferrari 3400

Thread Starter
Just noticed the Ferarri 3400 was posted on the Acer corporate site today. Go to products>notebooks>Ferrari and the 3400 is listed at the bottom under the Ferarri 3200. Somewhere else on the PCTorque forum was mentioned a release date of October 8 (this coming Friday) and so I suspect the Acer folks are getting their ducks lined up for release time.

The promo docs for the 3400 on the Acer site mention a 5-in-1 media reader whereas I thought the 3200 had a 4-in-1 reader. CPU for the 3400 is the newest LP Mobile AMD 64 with the same M9700 from ATI.

There does seem to be a new connector on the back of the 3400 which doesn't show on the pictures of the 3200, that being an expansion port of some type. Perhaps I'm wrong about this, but don't most laptops which have specific expansion ports also come with, well, specific expansion units? In other words, I'm wondering if Acer doesn't have a nifty new device for the new Ferarri. Pure speculation on my part.

Congrats with kudos to Acer: Your innovation, style, pricing AND quality are most impressive. If the other big manufacturers in the U.S. market aren't shaking in their shoes, it's only because they aren't paying attention.

Gotta go decide whether a Ferarri or the as1714smi makes more sense for me: A form of torture not too very different from having to choose between two beautiful women.

The new connector is for the docking station, very nice feature, I wish I had that on mine.

As comparing the 1714 with the 3400, if battery life is a concern then go with the 3400 3H1/2 compared to 45min on the 1714!!

If you wan't the big 17" screen and weight/battery/heat ain't a problem for you then the 1714 could be nice

Also the 1714 comes with a 5700FX card which is not comparable to the superior ATI 9700 128MB that comes in the 3400.

Tough choise

wait a sec.. what did they upgrade besides the cpu??
its a fine notebook for someone new. Not worth upgrading to from previous ferrari models, apart from the 3000. The only noticeble difference is the Cpu, From a 2800 to a 3000. I would buy it if they came out with a 3600 that had PCI express, more ram, faster HD etc

As far as I can see this is what's new with the Acer Ferrari 3400 compared to the current model:
  • Low-power Mobile AMD Athlon 64 3000+ processor
  • Port replicator
  • 5-in-1 card reader that can also take Memory Stick PRO
  • Wireless LAN 802.11b/g combo
  • Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2
  • New Ferrari optical mouse (?)
  • Slightly better battery life (?)

Hi guys,

I'm confused here. Isn't that the latest release of Mobile Athlon 64 is 3400+ and not 3000+. I'm not talking about the the other AMD Athlon 64+ processor (DTR). I'm talking about the specific Mobile AMD Athlon 64 3400+.

See here: http://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors/..._10221,00.html

Also, I just checked iBuyPower and the S-Turbo says it has Mobile AMD Athlon 64 3400+. Check out here: http://www.ibuypower.com/ibp/store/c...r.aspx?mid=120

Is Acer Ferrari 3400 still outdated?

Btw, this is a interesting site on 64bit OS.

http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase...64_preview.asp

This link also talks about the beauty of AMD Athlon 64 processors.

Rgds.

No, because it uses low-power Mobile Athlon 64 processors and the 3000+ is currently the fastest one available just see here:

hi,

if thats the case whats the other one for? (Mobile AMD Athlon 64 3400+). Is this is not low power? Also, the Mobile AMD Athlon 64 3400+ has 1MB L2 cache, but 3000+ has only 512KB L2 Cache.

I'm still confused. Can snorre or somebody else clarify me in detail?

Thanks.
snorre is correct
the most powerful low power version is the 3000+

But the most powerful mobile Athlon is the 3700+
http://www.amd.com/us-en/Corporate/V...~89033,00.html

What's next? An Acer Ferarri 3700 with low power 3200+ CPU ?

No, the regular Mobile Athlon 64 have a 62W TDP (Thermal Design Power) and 1MB L2 cache. The low-power Mobile Athlon 64 have a 35W TDP and 512KB L2 cache.

The major difference between the low-power and the regular version is the power usage.

You mean off all things to improve they didn't improve the HD? LoL!!!!!

At least they support docking station, which is a nice bonus!!

P.S. the only thing that changed is CPU.
if that is what you think then have a better look

CPU went from 2800 to 3000
It comes with a Port Replicator wich mine doesn't have
5in1 Card reader now supports Memory Stick wich mine can't

that alone must be worth of the upgrade cost.
Well, do we knw the price yet? If not, maybe theres still hope that it won't be overpriced compared to the older model... yeah ok, I can't keep a straight face while saying that
post #18 of 50
Lucky the new reader doesn't support CF....I would have been jealous then.

pro

my ferrari 3200 reads memory stick pro just fine. the first one i got thought did not, but the new one they sent me (dead pixel problems) could read it.

Acer Ferrari 3400

Has anybody heard anything about the Acer Ferrari? Sounds kind of good performance and hard drive wise.
