Does my laptop really have two CPUs?

Thread Starter
I am honestly not sure if my laptop has one or two CPUs, because when I ordered it it only said pentium 4, 3.40GHz Processor, but nothing about 2 CPUs.

but when I checked in DxDiag it says "...cpu 3.40GHz (2 CPUs)"

I know that this is probably a stupid question but I didn't even know if laptops could have 2 CPUs.

its hyperthreading, you can see them in device manager too. It doesnt mean you have 2 cpus, it means you have hyperthreading enabled, I think almost all the P4s support this.

You can also see this in the task manager. Under the performance monitor it will show two graphs (like having 2 CPU's) indicating that HT is enabled and functioning.

Nope..there's only one CPU...the P4 can "split itself in two" and act as two separate CPUs allowing multiple data threads at the same time.

Hyperthreading is the abililty for a processor to handle two threads at once but on a single processor. Windows sees a hyperthreading CPU as two CPU's. Linux will compile for symetric multi processing (SMP). Basically you have one CPU but your OS sees it as two.
