couple question on acer 1712

i've been looking at the acer 1712 and it seems like a really nice notebook, i just have a couple questions.

1. when they say it weighs 14 something pounds, is this the laptop with the powerbrick? or by itself? i've never heard of such a heave notebook

2. adam's review says that the gpu is removable as well as upgradeabe. does this mean that i can take any desktop gpu and just plug it in? if not, what cards can i upgrade to and where can i get them?

3. i didn't have time to scroll through all of acer's other models. are there any other comparable notebooks to the 1712 in acer's line?

thanks, this looks like a really nice notebook!!

Acer 1712 SMi

Mine's a 1712 SMi so I'll help anyway I can.

1. As for the weight, I just put mine on the scale and it's 15 pounds not including the power brick. It does come with an insert to take the place of the battery. Without the battery it should lighten up a bit. I should take mine out just to see what the difference is.

2. Don't hold your breath on a gpu upgrade, I emailed Acer and got a responce that there isn't any plan for it. It would be interesting to see if a Radeon from another Acer model would fit but unfortunately it's not in my budget to try that.

3. Can't say for sure, depends on what you want to do with it really. I stopped looking after I bought mine but would be happy to look at what else they have if it helps you out.

What I can tell you about mine is it makes a darn good desktop replacement. It's almost as heavy as a desktop too. It uses desktop CPU, RAM and hard drive which is nice but generates alot of heat which is kinda uncomfortable under the keyboard. If you have any other questions that I can help you with, please feel free to ask.

arghh...i really would've loved to have a gpu i can upgrade with any desktop gpu... other than that it looks really nice, especially with that sweet hd.

the 1800 also looks really nice, has pci-e, and is only $1659 at newegg.com

The 1800 does look nice and it's 5 pounds lighter. If you aren't looking for a full 17" display, that might be the way to go. I would be really nice to be able to upgrade with a regular gpu. Good luck with which ever you decide on.

it is a 17" display, just widescreen, which imo is better anyways. if you can't upgrade the gpu on the 1712 with a desktop gpu, then really the only thing going for it atm is the hd.

the 1802 on the other hand, has pci-e, widescreen 17" with higher-res, and is about 5lbs lighter, which isn't a big deal for me.

it's starting to look nicer and nicer...

ok, nevermind about the 1800, i read a thread in which the person called acer and the rep told him that the gpu isn't user-replaceable. i think i'll probably call acer to make sure that i can't upgrade the gpu... unless anyone here knows for sure?
