Power management in Dothan Processors

Hello!!!
I've recently acquired a Acer Aspire 2026WLMi. I've been playing with the machine, but I've noticed a problem...
Centrino is good because, in part, it has Steepspeed technology which allows for a better control of power usage (if I'm saying something really stupid, I'm sorry... I'm just starting into this world!)... When I got the computer I even found it strange that it would run at CPU clock speed of 600MHz when nothing was going on in the computer!!!

The problem is... right now, it doesn't happen any more! It's allways working at 2.0GHz and consuming huge amounts of battery (my battery, that should last for 4 hours, lasts for 2 the most)... Anyone can give some advice to me? I can only make the computer work at 2.0GHz (selecting the majority of power schemes) or at 600MHz (maximum battery life) and not a compromise in which steepspeed is controling CPU speed.

Can you also advice me of some programs to manage power usage (and CPU speed) besides the one in WindowsXP?
And what software can I use to precisely estimate battery life?

Thanks in advance to you all...

SpeedswitchXP. Nothing better(y)

First make sure you have the latest BIOS, then go to the Power Options in your BIOS and make sure that speedstep is on automatic.
After having done the above, download speedswitchXP, as DDDa suggested.
You could also solve this by getting the new XP SP2 but I have read that wireless problems appeared on Acer 2020 series after insatlling SP2 so ...

Thank you guys...

Well, the thing is I do not have an option in the Bios to activate de Speedstep...
Anyway, I already downloaded that program and the CPU is running as it's supposed to (controlling throttle according to usage).
But shouldn't WindowsXP (I already have SP2…damn) control this automatically?

Perhaps something on the background is using your CPU, causing it to run at its full 2.0Ghz. I don't think it has something to do with your bios, because you said it happened suddenly.

Try running Spybot Search & Destroy, Ad-Aware, Spyware Doctor, System Mechanic one after the other. If there is something in the background they should be able to catch it.
But yeah, winXP sp2 should be able to control the cpu trottle however this still has to do with newer versions of BIOS, I think.
