802.11G 54 Mbps Mini-USB / Mini USB

i tried to be as general in the topic to help people who search for this

but since there hasn't been any recent posts, does anyone know of any such adapters? if mini-usb is the successor to mini-pci, i would think that some vendors introduced them by now.

edit: this is the INTERNAL adapter i'm talking about

I don't understand the question.

i'm looking for an INTERNAL 54 g adapter that is mini-usb, not mini-pci as is used in other 54g internal applications

yeah i know what your talking about. I saw the mini-usb as an option on one of the discountlaptops.com 17" models (i.e. 4790,4750) and I did a web search and came up empty handed

no idea, keep us updated if you find something

You talking about this:

WUSB54GP

or this:
WUSB54GS

or this:
WUSB12

I suspect the first but one never knows
PS:I also like this:
USBBT100

no, no, no, no

i'm talking about an INTERNAL adapter for 54 mbps wireless. like the kinds in the 8790. the thing is, the 8890 uses mini-usb for it as opposed to mini-pci like any current notebook with internal 54 g.

Your title is confusing but I know what you mean. One of the reasons I did not upgrade my 8887 to the 8890 was the mini-USB on board. I remember looking for both mini-USB and mini-PCI about 6 months ago to see which I could find more for. I found some mini-PCI but not as many as I expected. I think I only found one min-USB but I was not looking that hard. I was not aware that the 4750/4790 were using min-USB. I'm also wondering what the PCI-X boards will have.

hmmmmmm, i don't know how to make it any more clearer. i guess i could add the world internal, but i thought that was implied by the mini-usb which is only available for internal devices. i guess people are confusing it with "mini" usb devices, as in those tiny usb devices that use regular usb ports but are external.

i'll add internal to the title, but it won't show up in the forums topic index for some reason

Sorry I guess I've never heard of it. The only internal wireless adapters I know of (a,b,g BT) are all mini PCI. I've never hear of mini USB. Is that like an internal form factor like the external mini-firewire ports? I thought all internal cards were either mini PCI or AGP (soon w/PCI-x16)

nah, i remember reading that mini-usb wasthe successor to the mini-pci. the only difference about it is instead of running on the pci bus, it runs on the usb bus, that and the card interface

PCI bus, USB bus, aren't they both limited by the Northbridge (or southbridge I really don't know which chipset handles that in notebooks I guess I would think that it's the same as desktops). What is the benifit of using the USB bus in a laptop? It's not like you could connect GBLAN and a SCSI adapter on the PCI bus (which WOULD make the PCI bus the bottleneck) so why would you want to? AFAIK there are only wireless adapters for mini PCI so what are you putting on your PCI bus that makes you want to move your wireless to USB? Cause if it's just gonna stay empty I would use the PCI and save the Mini USB for some internal card of another purpose, even though I have no idea what that might be as I have never really heard of mini USB and I know of no periferals or internal cards that use that form factor. Sorry to be of no help.

So, since we're on the subject of routers, which on works best with the 3790/intelpro 2200? Netgear looks promising (WGT624).
Not really routers, these are network adapters.
just looked up your part number. what you are takling about is a wireless router/hub. we're talking about internal network adapters that would allow you to conect to such a wireless router/hub.

i usually suggest d-link or linksys for routers

merdock, i have a mini-pci tuner card which is why i have to use the mini-usb. i currently have an 802.11b which came iwth my 8890, but i am now in need of an upgrade!

I heard the Linksys WirelessG (WRT54G) is the best all-around router/WAP. Anyone can second this (or challenge this)?

Sorry, This wireless stuff and terminology is new to me. Just trying to figure it all out. What to get to be wireless. I am assuming I need a router for my internal card to talk to/connect with whatever the term is. And the router I plug my modem into, I am assuming. Or is it an adapter that I need?

ah an internal TV tuner. out of curiosity is it really a mini PCI card or is it integrated in the battery and you choose between it and the subwoofer when you option your notebook. Or is it both, cause I would not be expecting that. Also are you sure that you don't have 2 mini PCI slots as I have seen a few (non centrino) notebooks running seperate wifi and bluetooth modules. Interesting though I still haven't really researched what miniUSB is. also w/ PCIx16 coming I'll be interested to see if any manufactures will try to use it as an all standard bus, Hmmm really thinking about that now as I'm not sure if you can get PCIe and PCI on the same board .... oh wait that's AGP. hmm I gotta look up this minniUSB.
