eMachine M6810 or Dell i9100

Thread Starter
I got the ok to buy a laptop but I'm on a budget. Under $1500 is the budget. The two laptops I'm looking at are listed below. I will be doing mostly web surfing, and using Office apps, but I will play a game or two on it also. All my heavy gaming will be done on my desktop. I know about the BestBuy PSP warranties, but now much about the Dell warranty other then when I deal with them at work. I don't have much good to say about them as far as that is concerned.

eMachine M6810
-Athlon 64 3200
-512MB PC2700
-60GB Hard Drive
-DVD/CDRW
-ATI 9600 w/64mb
-15.4" WXGA LCD
-3yr BestBuy PSP

Dell i9100
-P4 3GHz
-512MB PC3200?????
-60GB Hard Drive
-DVD/CDRW
-ATI 9700 w/128mb
-15.4" WSXGA+ LCD
-3yr Dell Warranty

Before you buy you should realize that the i9100 is a HUGE laptop with sub par battery life, I'd go with the eMachines. I had one before my current laptop then returned it. It was good, I just dont like widescreen.

The M6810 has the ATI 9600 w/64mb, not the 9700.

I haven't had great luck with the emachines, but I think my situation was freakish in that I had so many problems. I highly recommend them based on their performance and power in relation to the price. Bestbuy has done well in replacing my units when something went wrong.

I haven't any experience with dell service, but I know at work they have had quite a few problems with their dell laptops. It seems dell has more attachments and such, as far as docking stations, etc. Besides for the cracking hinge problem with the emachines I would totally recommend them. It just happend to me a few times, so I went another route and traded it in for an HP.

9100 will give much better gaming performance. Head over to the Dell forums and you'll see what I'm talking about.

Edit: since you'll be gaming mostly on the desktop, go with a non-9100. I'd recommend the 8600 over the eMachines anyhow...

The Dell screens suck.

The 9100 is HUGE. I dont think you realize how big it is until you see it for yourself, but my 17" Sony A was lighter, thinner, and not as long heighthwise. Than a 15.4".

If you're not going to game much on it why get a serious desktop replacement machine? I have a 12.1 4 lb notebook and I have to say, I really prefer carrying it around to the 10lb beast of the 9100 or 8.5lb semibeast of the Sony A.

I can play some games on this one. UT2004 works fine, it's smooth in 800x600. Which is not that great of a resolution, but at least it works and I can play.

You should consider something else besides the dell, seriously. THe 8600 is a nicer machine, but I still don't like Dell screens, they have 35ms resposne and it's very noticable compared to 25ms screens to me. Of course, I can actually tell a difference between 12ms and 16ms response rates.

Not all Dell screens suck. Many are pleased with their Dell screens, myself included. But I agree. The 9100 is probably not what you are looking for. I'm still putting in my vote to replace your choice of a 9100 with an 8600.

People who are pleased with Dell screens merely have not seen the screens other manufacturers use.
