700m problems - startup especially

hey do any of you guys notice that the more programs you load (even disabling auto-start service for those programs) booting up windows takes longer?? a LOT longer, i mean.. for me.. on my first install.. everything was fine.. until i guess one app blew it.. from then on it took 2-3 minutes to start up xp.. before that app was installed it usually took 40 or so seconds to load xp.. (40gb travelstar 7200) ... AND even when i uninstalled tons of things it still took 2-3 minutes...so anyway i reformatted.. but as i reload on some BASIC apps.. (powerdvd, word, etc etc) i see the same slowing down of xp booting up.. do any of you have this long long boot up problem? please let me know!! i have NO idea what's wrong! otherwise this 700m is sweet thanks in advance guys

I've gone thru and disabled and removed alot of those startup programs mine starts up fairly quickly

NO, you shouldn't have that, especially with a 7200rpm drive.
Are you saying that these programs actually load up when you turn your computer on? If they do not, you should be up and running, from pressing the power on button to windows log-on, in less than 1 minute.

yeah i removed the startup programs.. i dunno maybe i'm used to my crazy jacked up shuttle but i guess laptops should load slower than that.. but it just feels wrong.. i get the windows "Welcome" blue screen for a little too long, i think.. and for a while nothing happens.. i'm sure there's a memory leak somewhere.. it just sits at the welcome screen and i see no cpu activity for like 2 minutes.. blehhhhhh..

maybe ur running SP2. LOL

I would just reformat and reinstall XP

you could type in msconfig and see what is being run during startup and maybe find what the lag problem is.

Try running Spybot and Ad-Aware.

i didn't even install the internet.. how could i have any of that?

Hmm... good question. Never mind, then.

Virus then?

Ususally long boot up times usually suggest a driver is getting loaded, but not loading up correctly and repeating in a loop trying to load the device driver.

yeah, that sounds like it.. something is trying to load and is lagging it.. how would i go about correcting that.. any idea?

have u installed any devices or any programs? try to backtrack?

I would try to limit startup programs, but I don't know which ones are safe to delete. Any guidance or tips would be greatly appreciated.

BTW regardless of what you have read about SP2 slowing notebooks down could be true if it was a dirty install. However a clean install should yield nothing out of the ordinary.

IMHO you should always install the service pack first (in this case sp2 only), then chipset drivers, lan, video, sound, etc.

Please list the order of which you installed things after XP was freshly loaded.

backtracking doesn't work.. well right now it is okay.. startup takes around 48 seconds.. i loaded skype, norton (disabled ALL auto things), office 2k3, and some codecs.. but right now i have a feeling that a few more apps will break the limit and the 2-3 minute thing will happen again.. it jumps from 43-50 seconds to 2-3 minutes.. it's so weird.. i'm so scared of putting more apps on it but i need to!! like msn messenger and AIM.. the order was
1) XP SP2 fresh install.. all on one cd..
2) drivers and everything
3) Norton, Skype, Office 2k3, that's all for now.. i know norton isn't causing thepproblem..
at the time it took 2-3 minutes.. it felt like some memory leak when loading some drivers.. or some services.. i could do Crtl alt Delete and only a few items were there.. then I saw some more system processes 2-3 minutes into loading windows.. it's soo weird.. the processor light was blank for 2 minutes before windows finally loaded..

search here for info on bootvis and google it. let us know what you find out after you troubleshoot with it

A known problem with SP2 that is easily fixed and caues the boot process to hang for about 2-3 minutes after the windows start up screen but before you'll see the desktop.

Go to control panel, security center. In the virus protection section, click Recommendations button. Then check the "I have my own virus protection......" box and close the windows. This will fix this particular problem and it may be yours.
