SP2 Bugs???

Thread Starter
I installed Service Pack 2 on my second computer, and although it worked well on the first computer i installed it on...I'm finding that if i enter a folder that has Windows Media PLayer files in it (movie files)... and i am viewing it with thumbnails... explorer (not IE) has an error and the 'report error' screen comes up....it exists out of explorer then restarts explorer....

has anyone else encountered this problem? i am probably going to uninstall sp2 if there isnt a way to fix it...

thanks in advance

nevermind:

Explorer.exe and other applications may crash or be closed by Date Execution Prevention when opening a DIVX movie file or opening a folder using thumbnail view in explorer containing such a file

There are known issues between DIVX 5.2 and the memory protection improvements provided as part of SP2 (Data Execution Prevention). To prevent the issues you must modify DEP on your system to turn off Data Execution protection for the most trouble free expirence, to do this Go to Start -> Run and type in 'Notepad %SYSTEMDRIVE%\Boot.ini' without quotes. Under [operating systems] replace the parameter '/NoExecute= xxxxx' with '/Execute' (without quotes). Save the Boot.ini file and restart your computer. However you can 'Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select' and exclude the applications which will use the codec such as explorer.exe and wmplayer.exe using the in System Properties > Advanced Tab > Performance Settings > Data Execution Prevention Tab, however you may cause problems with other applications. Once a new version of DIVX compatible with SP2 is released you should upgrade and re-enable DEP for security purposes on your machine. Systems using software DEP appear to work for playback correctly in the default configuration to use DEP only for critial system processes and services.

You may find that you are unable to save changes to the boot.ini file because it is read only. If this is the case go to Start > run and enter ‘attrib -r -h c:\boot.ini' without quotes. This will allow you to make changes to the file. The –h parameter will also make the file unhidden so it can be viewed without having to enable ‘show hidden and system files' in explorer.

hope it works...

EDIT: nm, you just disabled DEP. I was going to suggest making an exception to DEP, but disabling it will do.

Why even have SP2? It is just a worthless upgrade. I say you should just uninstall it, unless there is something which SP2 does, which you think is worth all the hassel.

why do you have to be so critical to everyone’s decision....

because i felt like it thats why i installed it... i wasn't planning on it but windows downloaded it for me so i said "what the Fu*k...."

Hey don't get your panties in a bunch.

I was just curious if there was something that SP2 adds/does which talked you into taking the leap. I haven't heard a single positive comment on SP2 yet, and so I figure there had to be something positive SP2 provides you with, or you would have just uninstalled it instead of trying to fix the problem. So its my cuiriousity more then anything else.

it has a few nice features...

it monitors your firewall, virus protection and windows upgrade all in one place...which also has integrated alerts with those programs...

security is upgraded immensely...

all and all it makes windows a lot more stable... i didnt need the upgrade but I was having some problems with some programs and read that the upgrade fixes it so installed the upgrade and it works great… except for me explorer.exe problem..

Oh, so that was the problem. But AMDZen, SP2 is worth it. The Security Center settings are a lot easier to use and have the monitoring which is nice. That and the fact that if you ever want Critical Windows Updates again you need SP2 (may just be a rumor, but I've heard it.)

For some reason I always enjoy downloading all the updates Microsoft provides me with even if I don't use it, I just disable it all after I download it.

I don't know where you heard that but its not true, I've gotten 2 critical security updates since SP2 came out, but I don't have SP2. MS will continue to provide security updates for a while. Besides SP2 suxx now, some of the major issues it has will probably be corrected before they stop updating SP1. Not to mention that over 95% of the "Critical" updates are for Internet Explorer, and people that use that must be insane.

And no, SP2 is not worth it, obviously you haven't done your research on it but I'm not about to explain all the reasons its not. Who needs a security center?? I'm more then adept enough to control my security. I have a firewall, Windows firewall is useless whether its SP2 or not. IE is useless, people that use it must like spyware, or just have no clue. SP2 doesn't provide anything which I need or desire. If you need it, more power or rather, less power to you.

The only possible security advantage SP2 provides is if you have an AMD64 processor, since it has the virus code now enabled for that. And that, is useless to me too, I haven't had a virus in 6 years. The fact is, some people know that MicroSoft has the absolute worst reputation for security on the entire planet.

You're lucky, on my laptop for some reason, the SP2 install halts after the full install, throws up ACCESS IS DENIED, then reverses the install. Even as the local admin.

Ain't that a bitch?

very weird...

the only positive outcome of SP2 is that they are finally working on Windows 64

I couldn't get SP2 to install and be stable on my laptop until I created a slipstream CD. I had to use a manual slipstream method instead of automatic (ie: Autostreamer). The Dell Reinstallation CD includes SP1 and Autostreamer cannot process it correctly. I documented what I did to successfully slipstream the Dell Reinstallation CD this on my home page, and now SP2 is installed and running, and stable, with no problems. It may be useful to you.

I prefer to wait at least a couple of months before installing SP2. Like AMDZen said, the features of SP2 don't really impress me.

One thing I can say. At least SP2 isn't as bad as it used to be. At the end of September they fixed a lot of the Hardware issues SP2 had.

http://www.pcworld.com/news/article/0,aid,117895,00.asp

Now for some of the bad, which is more relevant at this time.

The main reason why I'm leary of it is because of the experiences people I know have had. More then a few of them have reported serious speed decreases using BitTorrent applications. Saying that they are experiencing roughly half the speed, on a good day. I've read countless articles on the net about SP2, and a lot of people are reporting the same issues. And this is only one of many which I decided to divulge. Azureus is my friend, and I'm not about to get SP2 until I know what this is all about.
