If by popping noises you mean pops before and after sounds, check this thread out

edit: Variable, I just saw your post on that thread. You should try setting the Wave volume to a low setting first, then just set that main volume slider up at like 90% and move it around up there a bit. I had to move it around a bit to get it to work for me.

I'm using a eMachine M6807 and my only problem I've been having is any audio coming out of this card has static in it. Its not loud static but its there in the background. I've got that ENE crap too and have been in contact with Creative. I tried the latest drivers for the ENE chipset and I just got my first 'pop' so I think those new drivers are bust. For those of you who are also hearing static is it just in the background and not overpowering your audio?

Edit: I just loaded up UT2004 and turned on Hardware sound, not a problem I can tell. The static might have been there but the game sound was louder. So far the static has been from MP3 playback only. I will test a DVD tomorrow.

I finally got one of these cards. Its awsome. VERY easy install with GREAT sounds.

On my 6805 the static is worst in Jedi Academy for me. In Halo I have lots of missing sounds but no static.

I don't know how likely it is that Creative is working on it. Their tech support is filled with lying morons from what I can tell. They say one thing, but when you reply, they tell you something like 'try a different PCI slot'. WTF. And I get switched from one guy to another so the conversation effort gets lost.

Uhg.

BTW, I told Creative EXACTLY what they need to do to get rid of most of the static with the ENE chip. I solved it by upping the Audigy card's PCI Latency to the max. Changing the registers of the ENE chip didn't have any positive effect. That was weeks ago.

I just tried the Hex Edit and I am still getting this static in my audio playback. Man this is irritating.

i found a way to make it stick but its flawed. u have to use wpcrset (search for it) but the problem is that it doesnt allow u to enter in more than 2 digits for the bus!!!!! it is supposed to allow 3 digits but it wont! if it did then u could simply add 129 into buss and 0D to offset and F8 to register to fix the problem. ****!

Haha boy am I impressed. I fixed my static with MP3 playback by turning on Hardware Acceleration in Winamp. Near as I can tell, no static in WMP i just never bothered trying. Big oops on my part. eMachines m6807 + Audigy 2 Notebook working 100% with the latest PCIMCIA Drivers for my EnE chipset, no need for PCI Latency fix.

Hrm, I might buy one now if that's the case. How are the drivers? Would I have to install a typical HUGE creative driver suite with all the utilities, splash animations and spyware? That's the only thing that's holding me back if the static isn't an issue anymore.

If u don't really care about sound quality that much (I have a 2.1 Harmon Kardon set and at nite I usually use headphones) is there any reason to get this soundcard (performance wise I mean).

Thanx.

1. Better performance in games- this will improve frame rates more than overclocking the gpu in some cases.
2. Better sound quality- hopefully there's no interference.
3. Better surround support
4. ASIO support- so I can finally use cubase
5. Soundfont support with nifty reverb/echo effects- I have some 250mb soundfonts that sound brilliant.

Thanx for the info BigTrouble,

so since I'm getting a 9860, hopefully soon (there is some profound guilt involved when u debate buying a $3000+ laptop for gaming while halfway around the world a sizeable portion of humanity has been decimated by a record breaking Tsunami ) then the increase in frame rates wouldn't really be necessary for someone like me, right?

Get the creative card. The sound quality is worth it.
I love my card. The only problem I've had with it is trying to get it to work with my Norton AntiVirus...
IMO, if you do anything more than listen to windows sounds with your computer, you will benefit from the Audigy Notebook.

If you are a VERY serious musician, there is probably a better card. But, the Audigy's ASIO support seems to work flawlessly for me, though I'm sure I'm not stressing it with Mixmeister.

But, the Audigy Notebook is absolutely certainly the best card there is for gaming, and it's audio quality will definitely beat all integrated audio solutions.

Where is the option to turn on hardware acceleration in winamp? Can't find it.

Yes, it comes with all that bloating crap. You can install JUST the drivers though.

Options -> Preferences -> Plug-ins -> Output -> 'Double Click' DirectSound -> Allow Hardware Acceleration

Depends on the game. I doubt that you will be consistently getting 60fps in HL2 or doom3 at full res, full detail.
