Is that good or bad?

Its my understanding that anything over 35 fps is playable and anything more than that is just wasted overkill that only serves to create more heat more than anything else....

Well, I can tell the difference between 35fps and 60fps. I actually get a little nautious if the frame rates are too low for some reason. You're not going to create more heat by running at faster frame rates, you create more heat by stressing the card to the extent of it's capabilities.

Most people that will do anything to squeeze out a few more FPS will do so by overclocking, driver tweaking, etc. rather than using a sound card that will take some of the load off of the CPU and improve FPS.

For $110 it appears to be worth it, and that's coming from a creative hater.

I have an Acer 1710Smi with ENE CB1410 PCMCiA (drivers v5.1.2600.2004 - 07/27/2004). Will the Audigy 2 ZS Notebook work ok with my laptop? (Asking cause I've read problems with ENE CB1410 PCMCiA).

Yep, I have one of these babies. It does stick out a bit, and it has a jack for a set of earphones and a jack for a microphone. And like he said you can use both 5.1 and 7.1 speakers. But keep in mind, it does not support earphones like Zalman Surround Sound that require three separate earphone jacks. It only has one earphone jack.

I use the PCMCIA card when travelling since it is so much smaller. I have the external sound card with the three separate jacks for home use.

I love this Audigy card. I use it on my 9860 when I'm at home from the road. I use the built in card that comes with the 9860 when I'm on the road. Boy, that built in card now seems like crap compared to the Audigy

Keep in mind though, the Audigy will only work with external speakers. I had to decide whether to buy a set of nice 2.1 speakers (around $100.00) or to buy the PCMCIA Audigy so I could keep using my 6.1 speakers - No brainer here.

BTW, I do notice a bit of acceleration when playing Doom 3 using the Audigy vs the built in card...

Have you tried using the Audigy vs internal sound for headsets? Does it make a big difference?

Yes - it is noticeable, especially for DVD-Audio and high res sound sources.

Actually, couldn't one use the Zalman's with this? With the analog output jack, you get three 1/8 minijack connectors for front, rear, and center, which is what the zalman's need. So, you should be able to use the notebook audigy with the surround headphones. I don't own a pair to test with, but it should work fine.

I also have an acer (aspire 2025) with the ENE 1410 and I'm wondering if there is any decisive way anyone has found to fix any audio problems I might have. I want to be able to enjoy my music, and record my own, albeit nothing of high quality (I use Cakewalk) but I want to have the best sound reproduction for the best value. If there is no fix because the ENE is just trash, are there any other PCMCIA cards that you can record with (The indigo can't, right?)

Thanks so much,

jeff

I'm beginning to think these magical ene cardbus drivers that came out dec 29, 2004 don't exist. If anyone has these drivers please post a link or let me know and i'll host them.

The only solution to running this card in the higher performance mode on these laptops is by doing the wpcredit hack described earlier in this thread. It's such a pain in the ass because I have to have the program running all the time and I have to reinitialize it after every time my laptop goes into standby. Even by adjusting the latencies you still get some clicks and pops, but I can live with it. Problem is, I can't do any audio recording after setting the latencies so high.

I did send an email to ENE for clarification but they never responded.

Try the Acer homepage and look for the download for the Acer Travelmate 2600. There u should find some new drivers. I got a HP zt3130 with an ENE 1410 but I got no troubles, except sometimes with the creative software..

Hope you find it!

Sorry, I'm in a rush right now so don't have time to go through all of these pages (maybe later). Is there anyway to get this card working in linux? I'm running Ubuntu by the way.

I just tried those drivers. Still get tons of clicks and pops. still have to use the latency hack to make the card usable.

Are you sure you're hearing the crackling? It's less pronounced with the later drivers, but it's definately there. I use my headphones most of the time so I can hear it really well.

BTW, I had to use the drivers from the 2700 model as the 2600 had no pcmcia drivers. Are those the ones you were talking about?

There are a couple disadvantages I can see in Audigy Notebook over NX.

It is only PCMCIA, so it will only work with a notebook.
USB NX "could" be used with notebook or desktop just as well.

Some modern laptops may have issues with cardbus. My i9200 uses Ricoh 5C476, which is on the Creative list as having known problems with the ZS. This may prevent the card from using advanced mode or EAX4. USB will not have these issues.

BTW, today is the last day Newegg has a $20 rebate on the ZS.

anyone try the newest drivers released on the 8th?

I can not get the sound to re-route threw the onboard speakers. it sounds like it worked but it doesn't quite make it.

Sager 5680 user here, if it does work for you please post what machine you have please.

Routing through the speakers works on my Dell Inspiron 8600 but it seems to require a reboot if I take out & re-insert the card since last boot. Under "Sound & Device Properties", make sure that your default audio playback device remains "SB Audigy 2". The obvious part - within Creative's Feature Mode Selection utility, click on the "Enable audio playback through Notebook Speakers." Use the "Test" button to check.

There appears to be no down-sampling to the notebook speakers. For instance, DVD-Audio playback through the notebook speakers does not work.

Come discuss the new audio through notebook speakers feature as well as the new drivers released in this thread with me here:
