0_o ... wow. From the number of posts you've posted I'm assuming this is a rather new laptop. Is dell shipping d800's with plastic lcd covers now?? What's going on.

Well I recently bought it off Ebay. I'ts previous owner says its about 18 months old. I think he's right according the wear on the palmrest and all the scratches. Maybe the Dell has plastic LCD covers in Europe (It's a UK model).

I dunno, spiike... when I dropped my laptop I got a crack on the corner to the immediate left of the left hinge (the one without the lights). I would assume that aluminum wouldn't crack.

Do you think it's worth it for me to do a chassis swap now, spiike or somms? Everything is still in working order... but, well, I dunno.. small crack there, added flexibility in that corner, fans might be off-balanced. 1 year limited warranty that expires in Junr 2005.

I guess most people take good care of their laptops so the don't know if it's plastic or metal. Then reading your post they just assume the cover is made of metal. An easy check would be picking the LCD cover with your fingernails, the sound should give it away. Maybe we could ask for this on the official Dell forum.

Would i be able to get the same effect using overhead transparencies?
Nope, wouldn't fit the screen correctly I would think. Unless you got some massive ones and cut them to size, even then I think the plastic may not have the same effect...

And Xing, anyway that they could be seen as stress fractures from normal use and covered under the warrenty? (Seeing as near the hinges )

With this, can I touch the screen without leaving fingerprints and all?
Stu -- sorry I missed your post. I will look into that. It's a good point.

I *think* you'll still leave prints.

I decided to take the plunge and purchased it for my 8600. It arrived yesterday in a less-than-perfect condition, where the cardboard packaging was damaged. Installation was a bit of a pain for me since dust kept getting into the space between the screen and protector. It also took quite a bit of patience to get it to fit onto the screen.

Unfortunately, there's quite a bit of a dent at one part of the protector. I emailed tech support today, and they responded within 3 hours! They're going to ship another one to me tomorrow. I would say this is the best tech support I've encountered so far, ever.

As for using it in classrooms, the reflection is a bit distracting, but does not exactly impair the readability of the screen, even at lowest contrast. It's a very small price to pay, considering that my friends can touch my screen all they want without causing any permanent "damage" - fingerprints come off really easily with this.
