Wireless Problems

Alright, the problem I'm having is that I can't access the internet using my wireless card. I can connect, and I get good signal strength, but it won't display web pages. Anyone know why?

Hrm. A few weeks ago I had the same problem: would get wireless signal, but webpage wouldn't load. The first step I did was to confirm that I'm receiving a valid IP address from the router. Turned out my IP was set to the Windows' default (something like 169.254.x.y). An ipconfig /release and /renew fixed it for me.

Best of luck!

The ipconfig commands don't work. It just sits there and doesn't do anything.

Does "ipconfig" by itself display a valid IP address? (One that you were expecting from your DHCP?)

I had this problem when I just setup my wireless router. Later I found out that I had to change "Use the following IP address" to "Obtain IP adress automatically".(At Network connection>Wireless network connection>properties>Internet protocol(TCP/IP)>Properties)

It was already set to that.

Is this something that just happened, like it was working fine before?

I used it once long ago, but it hasn't worked since I've been at college.

Make sure your wireless connection isn't bridged

Right click My network Places >> Properties >> it should show at the top High speed internet and then your 10/100 card and wireless card.

If not just right click the wireless connection and click unbridge.

Nope, that didn't work either.

What type of router are you using? Access Point or a Broadband routher?

I have no idea. I'm in a dorm and I'm connecting to the university's wireless network...

Is the wireless card setup correctly, to settings that the college specifies? It could be that there are too many people on the lan and you cant get an IP. There is definitely a problem with the network card Obtaining and IP. I would try to get a hold of tech at school, its probably a security setting.

I had the sme problem. Then I realized my university required a program called VPN client for the internet to work.

Check with the IT dept. for the proper configuration.

OK, since I'm not having any luck, I've decided to go all the way and install SP2. I know some people around here have mentioned conflicts with the Bluetooth software and the like, so should I uninstall the bluetooth and wireless drivers before I install SP2?
no, install sp2 and then reinstall drivers if you decide to go with sp2. but one thing, does your dorm wireless have WEP encryption? if so, get the WEP code and try that, other than that i can suggest that you ask your tech department for a static ip to log on to as i assume they are using a DHCP setting on their routers.....worse comes to worse...ask them for help to config your laptop.

have you been downloading or doing high bandwidth stuff? or maybe your university network requires MAC Address filtering? or something? I'd check with the university system first

To emphasize what device manager said before, I'd suggest asking your IT dept. what to do. It may be a setting on the wireless network that was recently changed or something... a friend had a similar problem but needed software to access the internet. I have no idea whether that is the case with you.

I recall mentioning that 4 days ago.

Wooster, do you establish a working connection anywhere else where there is a wireless connection available?

If you do then it's safe to say you still need to contact your college IT dept.
